• Free Comic Book Day

  I love me some comic books, but they are way too expensive. (Not that this stops me from buying them, mind you.) And if they cost too much for me, they definitely cost too much for the average kid. That's one of the reasons for Free Comic Book Day, which is tomorrow (Saturday, May 3rd). Stores all over the world give away free comics in the hopes of getting more kids interested in funny books.   Read More... • The Return of the 10 Grand Birthday

  Write about parent-y stuff long enough and you'll notice certain stories cycle in and out again and again. One of the modern classics is the super-duper expensive birthday party for kids. Yes, some parents are hosting shindigs that cost up to $10,000, and there's even companies like Over the Top Productions that will help you spend your money plan your kid party. These stories usually have quotes from some parent who says it was worth it to "create a memory" that will last a lifetime (though often the kid is so young it's unlikely they'll make a mental snapshot of that pony ride) and then there's a few folks who didn't exactly mean to spend so much, it just sort of happened. • Finally, a Good Reason to Have Kids! No Cuddle Parties.

  With the exception of a little bout of standoffishness at ten months old, my kid has always been one of those snuggly bunnies. She likes to cuddle on the couch with me and read or watch Pingu. It's pretty much one of my favorite things about having a kid. And thank the lord, it also saved me from the need to attend a Cuddle Party. You know, one of those parties where you spoon with strangers and practice communicating your wants openly and get some real physical contact. The motto is: "Making Relationship Real." First thought: eeeeewwwwww. Second thought: real yucky. Third thought: gawd, doesn't anybody like good, old-fashioned sex any more? Why does it always have to be about the connecting and relating? What, I ask you, happened to the nasty? But in fairness, I tend to do really badly at things that require lots of open-mindedness. That's why I'm a blogger. But so far my favorite thing about Cuddle Party was watching my sister, who has a serious, almost phobia-like aversion to feet, read the section on foot cuddling. • Meet Ayun Halliday at the M.A.M.A. Fundraiser (Why Can't We All Live in NYC?)

  New Yorkers, you are so freaking lucky. Any of you that wants to can meet Ayun Halliday author, Babble reviewer, and "parenting celebrity" at the Mother's Alliance for Mutual Aid (M.A.M.A.) fundraiser next Friday, February 23, from 6:00-9:00PM at ABC No Rio, 156 Rivington Street, NYC. Halliday will be signing all four of her books, back issues of the East Village Inky, Dare To Be Heinie-wear, and anything else you stick under her nose at this mama-powered craft fair.  The fair will boast a kid's art area, tarot readings, and kissing booth (rockin!). Handmade arts, crafts, zines, comics, and baked goods will be sold to benefit M.A.M.A.'s (almost) annual Mothers Day event, Mamas Rising Up!, a reclamation of Mother's Day as an activist holiday that celebrates caregivers.
