If you find yourself with toys, clothes and whathaveyou coming out the wazoo this holiday season, and are thinking of boxing them up and “cycling” them for your kids like I do, maybe you should consider this (via Parenthacks):
Edmay Mayers, a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stationed in Iraq, has been running a toy drive for Iraqi children since October. While she, and the children she cares so passionately for, have been receiving toys by the truckload, there is so much more they need: clothes, shoes, jackets, books, school supplies (paper, pencils, crayons, etc.) and blankets.
I often find myself thinking about meaningful ways in which to help my kids learn the value of compassion, and generosity. Even preschoolers can understand that there are people in the world without homes, without families, without the comforts and luxuries that they enjoy - and that they can help. What a powerful lesson there is in that - and what an empowering way for kids to truly embody the spirit of the winter holidays.
