Most births are blessedly trouble-free, but when things go wrong, they
can go wrong fast. One such complication is shoulder dystocia, when the
baby gets stuck at the shoulders behind the mother’s pubic bone during
delivery. While there are risk factors such as having diabetes, being
overweight and carrying a big baby, most cases happen without warning.
That’s
bad because 20 percent of shoulder dystocia cases result in some major
injury to the baby, including birth asphyxia, fractures of the humerus
or collarbone, cuts, bruises or damage to the brachial plexus nerves,
which can lead to paralysis of the arm and hand.
