These days, there are plenty of ways -- some scientific, others
based on old wives' tales -- to allegedly guarantee the sex of your
next baby. But should you take advantage of them? 
That's one of the questions raised in Jeanne Sager's essay, "Pick a Sex, Any Sex,"
which delves into such methods as voluntary IVF (cost: $14,000) and
MicroSort, a sperm-spinning process with a more reasonable price tag of
$3,000. Then there is my favorite approach, which supposedly guarantees
a boy and involves using a baking soda douche, giving the male caffeine
before sex and making sure the woman reaches orgasm first. (Um, pardon
me for a sec, but if having a boy relied on a woman climaxing first,
there would be a lot fewer males born every year. Just sayin'.)
