  We all know that exercise is the magic bullet for so many maladies that plague the modern parent: stress, sleep deprivation, lack of stamina to keep up with these constantly moving little maniacs (okay, maybe that’s just me), but finding a way to stay active along with the 19 million other things you need to get done in a day can be difficult. And while kid chasing certainly keeps you going, it doesn’t really count as the 30 minutes of moderate exercise we’re supposed to get on most days. Gaiam (the people who bring us those yummy Rodney Yee yoga videos as well as the best Pilates ones I have ever tried) offers up some interesting tips on their blog. What makes this different from the bajillion other pieces of advice out there is that it actually breaks it down by age instead of just giving vague advice like “Babies love sit-ups!” For example, it suggests dancing with babies and toddlers (mine love this). • Toddler Accidentally Killed At YMCA T-Ball Game

  I always get a hitch in my chest when one of my kids walks too close to other kids on the swings, or climbs too high in a tree, or darts a few feet away from me in a parking lot.  And sometimes I wonder if I'm just being overly paranoid. Now, two-year-old Henry Berlin of Kentucky is dead, after being struck in the chest with a T-ball bat while playing with a YMCA group.  The child swinging the bat was Henry's four-year-old sister.   Read More... • Wii Whee at the Y: YMCA's Use Wii to Get Kids Moving

  Wiiiiiiii! (I've been dying to say that.) Kids at YMCA's around the country have something special in store for them: Nintendo is donating W11 party packs to 100 YMCA's, with the thinking that they will "help bridge the gap between parents and their kids." Which I'm all for. In fact, even though I'm basically opposed to video games for all the reasons other people are (not enough activity, addictive, too much screen time and not enough book time, etc) I'm really really attracted to Wii. Why? The physical aspects of it. (I totally need to cream my eleven-year-old at Wii Sports to prove my prowess)  So YMCA? Sign me up.  Oh, and what I said about addictive? Never mind.
