Jon and Kate Season Premiere Countdown ...

So the Jon and Kate plus Eight season premiere is in a few hours, and already the news is in: Jon is having an affair. With Elmo. It's sure to be a very special episode. Bring the kids.

OK, so maybe not Elmo, per se, but someone. And Kate, too, apparently. On top of the affairs, there's paparazzi, nosy neighbors, drive-bys and people who literally stop at their house to walk up to the porch and peer into their windows, hoping, I suppose, to see Jon hunched in the corner, crying himself to sleep.

Why?

Not why as in why do these crazy gawkers do this? But why do Jon and Kate continue to let them? I'll get back to that in a moment.

It does, indeed, promise to be a very ... odd episode, as the couple tries to come to grips with all these rumors and accusations -- all while watched and critiqued by millions. I read an interesting inteview Karl posted over at FameCrawler the other day, and between the lines it seemed pretty clear that it sucks for the family to deal with this ... and yet, there's so much money involved, so much possibility. Eight kids cannot be easy to raise, financially speaking, and this show and media frenzy just seems to be, in their eyes, what they have to do to make their future work.

But what impact will this have on the kids in years to come? What impact is it having now?

It makes me wonder: If you had eight kids and the possibility of having everything they could ever want paid for (important things like college and hamsters, I mean), would you continue to put them through this very public ordeal?

My thoughts about Jon and Kate aside, I don't think that anyone who hasn't been in that situation can really answer the question of what would they themselves would do. It probably depends on the availability of family support, income-generating potential, etc.

I just like how they keep saying "They face each other for the first time" the first time???? They don't LIVE TOGTHER???

As a mom I know I would do whatever it took to provide for my children - it may mean all hand me down clothes and getting very creative with how to stretch our budget, but they aren't the only large family out there!!! I have plenty of friends who come from families of 6,7,8 + !!

I just finished watching the premiere and it was very sad.  It seems that both Jon and Kate in trying to provide for their family got caught up in the fame, money and the challenge of parenting 8 kids.  They both talked about how "everything they do is for thier kids".  Well, that's probably not entirely true, but that could be part of the problem.  They should take care of each other (their marriage) and themselves too.  I don't believe in "child centered parenting".  I believe in "family centered parenting" which includes all the relationships in the family..especially your marriage.  Anyway, it will be impossible for the kids not to be impacted by a divorce..so I really hope Jon and Kate work things out...even if it means pulling the plug on the show.

No matter what, I'll watch the show. But I have a feeling the cameras will follow you around anyway.  Show the public that you can remain friends and stay sincere to the kids. I would also suggest that the kids get counseling. Things can work out if you want as long as the kids see that you can still show respect for one another and life goes on.

oh, i just finished watching the premiere and it saddened me so. i hope for them they can work things out. i so hope people stop putting them down and start rooting for them. I couldn't never assume what i would do or who i'd become if i were in their shoes. I beg people to stop tearing into them, especially kate... she may be getting wrapped up in fame and fortune... she's human and not he first person to do so. i have a friend who is so much like her, a bit harsh on the outside but just an amazingly loyal and giving person. so stop assuming you know her just because you've seen a snippit of her life on TV... i know i couldn't do what she does.

i think they are so caught up in fame and fortune. I won't be surprised if a lot of twists are being put on to attract more viewers.

I don't know about anyone else, but I feel lied to.  Over the past couple of years I have watched the show, I thought I was watching "reality" now it seems it was all fake?  Everything was staged?  What about the renewing of vows?  Was that decided on based on a free trip to Hawaii or was it something they wanted to do to reaffirm their love? I know for the sake of television every show cannot be spontaneous, but I wonder if any of it was real.  This makes me more mad at the so called producers of the "reality" show not John and Kate!

Everyone keeps wondering about the kids, but I think when we look at historically what children in the media have faced, especially when it comes to multiples, these kids are doing fine. Secondly, I think very few people realize the financial difficulty of raising 8 children today. The average income for the area (I live in Central PA like they do) is only around $50,000. When my husband was making that much we could hardly make ends meat with one child, let alone 8. Jon is in IT so he probably makes significantly more then that, but they are far from being rich. Even with the income with the show, free stuff and Kate's book sales they are probably not bringing in as much money as everyone seems to think. Even if they made a million dollars a year, it would still be hard to raise these kids.

Being on TV they also are getting lots of things they otherwise would not be able to have. Of course many of the shows were probably staged, that is what reality shows are.
