New Graffiti Law May Make Parents Pay

Posted by SunnyChanel

Hide those markers, spray cans and Sharpies. If a decision is passed in Los Angeles, parents there could be financially responsible for their kids rebellious tagging and attempts at street ‘art’. Under this new proposed law, mom and dad would be cited for vandalism and have to pay a fine along with being sent to parenting class. The money paid by the parents would go to help clean and repair the property that had been damaged by the graffiti.

But this proposal isn’t unwarranted. Los Angeles pays more than $7 million a year to clean up graffiti at about 675,000 locations across the city.  In the City of Industry the cops launched an anti-graffiti sweep to try to catch members of two of the main ‘tagging teams’. In the sting, ten juveniles and two adults were arrested.  The decision on the law will take place on May 20th.

Do you think parents should have to pay for their kid’s youthful indiscretions like graffiti?

I wonder what kinds of kids are more likely to engage in tagging et al? If it's kids who are poorer or who have less stable family structures, I don't know that fining parents without resources will help. If it's bored rich kids, that's another matter. I'd like to know more about who's doing the vandalizing before I passed the law, though.

I wonder if these kids are truly getting their material from Dad's garage, or if they're having an older friend buy them?  In our area you have to be 18 and show ID to get spray paint, but not markers or Sharpies.

Yes, more parental supervision and parents knowing that their kids are involved is ideal to help get the kids to stop...but fining parents doesn't do much but necessitate that someone's going to have to work more to make money to pay that fine.  And if the kids are under 16, it's mom and dad.  Meaning the kids will be left alone even more to get into trouble.

I think it's a great idea.  A lot of parents don't care what their kids do.  This way the parents are affected so they are inspired to at least attempt to reign in their kids.  That means kids of all socio-economic backgrounds.  My younger brother teaches High School, and he has little control over his classrooms because the parents simply don't care what the kids do.
