10 Year Old Burned By Tanning Bed

Posted by Brett Singer

A 10-year-old girl was burned after sitting in a tanning bed for 16 minutes. This makes me mad.

ParentDish tells us about a 10-year-old Welsh girl named Kelly Thompson. Kelly spent 16 minutes in a tanning bed and suffered burns over 70% of her body. If she had stayed in the bed for two more minutes, she would have needed skin grafts, according to the Daily Mail. The girl has been told to stay out of the "direct sunlight" for 10 years because her skin is now much more susceptible to skin cancer.

10 years! It's like she became a vampire.

The tanning salon is unmanned, and the tanning beds are coin-operated. Also from the Daily Mail is this quote: Julie Barratt, of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, said: "Allowing this industry to self-regulate is not working. Unmanned suntanning salons are a particular problem as they are subject to no controls at all. The only way we can protect young people from this sort of self-inflicted damage is to control the use of sun-tanning facilities by legislation."

Well, maybe. There's something else that will help. Telling kids that tanning is a really bad idea. I know, that won't always work. But that photo is of Kelly and her mother, Sharon Hannaford, who is demanding a ban on unattended tanning. Not to be catty, but where do you think Kelly got the idea that tanning was something she should be doing?

Why at ten years old would her parent's let her tan? Why does a 10 year old need a tan? On so many levels this is wrong. You are not being catty. She learned that tanning was a good idea from her oompa loompa orange mother! I wish women would stop doing this to themselves. It never look good.

Mom needs to look in the mirror before she starts screaming for bans and regulation.  Where do you think her child got the idea that this was good and healthy and what you do?

Seriously, I'm really sorry the girl got burned. It's got to be almost unbearably painful. However, what the heck was she doing in a tanning bed in the first place? Her mom is nasty overtanned, wonder if she encouraged her daughter to tan, or if the girl just got the idea from looking at her mom.

Holy crap!  I had to laugh at CV's comment, since my first thought on seeing the pic was her mother's new nickname should be oragina!  Seriously, who on earth let's their 10 year old go lie in a tanning bed?  And even if people do, why wasn't she there supervising?!?

I used to lie out when I was younger, and I got some bad sunburns.  Now I am the one lecturing everyone I know that Pale Is The New Tan.  And as easy as it is for me to tan, my pale skin looks more fantastic in a LBD on date night with the husband than it ever did when I was darker!

I dont think there is anything worng with being tan, but I am an adult and know when enough is enough (apparently her mother does not) but what kind of parent lets her child tan at 10 yrs old, and then blames it on the tanning beds?

I was grocery shopping the other day, and I almost bumped into this woman, and I turned to apologize and I almost left out a gasp or something. That lady was sooooo tan. she looked like she was in her 50's (and I am sure that the over tanning has something to do with that). She may not have been orange, but she sure puts the mom above to shame.

Why the hell does a 10 year old girl need to tan anyway? And why did she stay in that long? Is she mentally retarded? And to her mom by acting like your daughter is a victim your pretty much telling her its ok to be stupid you can just whine about it and get on the internet -.-
