Barbie is stoked. Today is her 50th birthday, she looks fab, she’s still famous and her Dream House has finally become reality. As part of the festivities to celebrate a half a century or plastic and pink, the potter and interior designer Jonathon Adler was commissioned by Mattel to create a Barbie paradise in a 3,500 square foot beachfront mansion in Malibu.
"Barbie was a dream client because she doesn't exist as a person," Adler said. "She exists as fantasy and is the perfect client because she's always happy and fun and loves everything. I thought to myself, 'How would Barbie live?' What I thought was Barbie would have a house that is glamorous, kittenish, chic, colorful and happy — as well as functional.”
What does a real life Barbie Dream House include?
• A closet filled with 50 pairs of pink peep-toe stilettos.
• A kitchen stocked with ingredients for cupcakes
• A bedroom with wall to wall pink carpeting
• A Warhol portrait valued at $200,000
• A garage with a pink Volkswagen Beetle
• Plus an in house museum with 25 vintage Barbies
To celebrate the new digs there will be a star studded birthday party organized by “event-planner-to-the-stars” (and the dolls) Colin Cowie with A-listers, a signature drink and much pink partying.
If you weren't invited to party with Ken, Skipper and Midge, you can still spend the night is such saccharine sweetness. A large part of the décor will be transported to the Palms Casino Resort in Vegas for a special Barbie Suite. Would you live in Barbie's Dream House?
