Breast Milk Cupcakes

Posted by Brett Singer

Someone eating a cupcake made with breast milk. Really.I was more skeptical of this one then I was of the snow ice cream. What would inspire someone to do this? (Other than needing something to bring to a La Leche meeting, I mean. I kid.)

Curiosity I suppose. But according to Viceland (note: the site has language and images that are not safe for work, click the "source" link below if you're OK with that), these made with mommy milk cakes are quite tasty. In fact, in a taste test, they beat out cupcakes made from cow's milk.

A comedian whose name I can't recall once wondered about the first person who thought it would be a good idea to milk a cow. "Hey, look at those things hanging down underneath Bessie. I wonder if liquid comes out when I squeeze them. It does! Hey, I wonder if I can drink it? I can! Clem! C'mere, check this out!" Or eggs. "Look what came out of that chicken. I wonder if it would if the goopy stuff inside of it would taste good fried and served with grits. Mmmm. Clem! Get back out here!"

When you look at it that way, breast milk cupcakes don't sound nearly as weird. (Actually, lots of people question whether or not cow's milk is something humans should be putting in their bodies. But that's another topic.)

I always wanted to try breast milk while my wife was nursing. It felt somehow wrong, though. Like it wasn't mine to eat, y'know? I did taste a teeny bit when I was warming up a bottle, and if I recall correctly it was kind of salty.

We had a freezer full of milksicles at one point. I never realized that this was a tasty frozen treat.

Has anyone ever tried cupcakes, or any other food, made with breast milk? Would you?

I tried my own breast milk.  Why not?!  It was what was best for my baby, so it certainly wasn't disgusting as a concept.  Unlike, as you wrote, drinking the milk of another species.  Still, I must say I only TRIED it, as it did feel a little odd to drink something that came out of my body (even if it was food for my little one).  I don't think I'd be whipping up recipes for it or anything!

For the record, it was thin and sweet.  Think vanilla rice milk.

Vanilla rice milk indeed. I cannot imagine cooking with my milk though. Don't think I had any to spare for a recipe. Every drop was for the babe. I think people get a bit crazy.

I tried my friends milk once. Not from the tap but from a bottle she was making for her baby. I never tried my own. I thought that was way too weird. Anyway, hers was sweet. I have never had rice milk so I am unsure of the comparison.

I think this is a very strange concept. I know cow's milk is not pure but I have never seen a cow tip back a can of Budweiser and have a cigarette on a Friday night. How would you know what the milkmakers diet consisted of? That is the sketchy part.

I have heard of someone making ice cream with human milk. Did people get bored or something? This is such a strange concept.

Unlike Tolani, I could have fed a nation with all my breastmilk. So, I get that part...

I've tasted breast milk, and agree with the vanilla rice milk comparison.

And as long as vanilla rice milk is readilt available, I'd prefer that people use that instead of their breastmilk for baking/cooking anything I or mine might eat. Breastmilk is primo baby food. If you have extra, donating it to a milk bank will help babies much more than making cupcakes out of it will.

Tasted my own and tasted a friend (like Twyla, not from the tap!). I think that fresh breast milk is very sweet and comparible to vanilla rice milk. A little too sweet for my liking. But when it's refridgerated and then reheated-- not so good! It develops a strange taste (and odor) that I find most displeasing. Still, many babies everywhere love their reheated breastmilk so, maybe it's just me! Well, and my son b/c he certainly liked it fresh much better than the reheated also!

And, Brett, I am surprised that you never tried your wife's breast milk, other than sneaking a small taste from a warming bottle-- see, you really should tried it fresh!
