Round 1: Baby Food Taste-Off

Posted by Madeline Holler

I dry-heaved my way through this short video over on Chow. One thing even more disgusting than meat-laden baby foods is an adult snacking on them, which is what Chow columnist James Norton did.

Better him than me.

Norton taste-tested jars of butternut squash from three different baby food makers -- Roundy's, Gerber and Nature's Best. Not so bad. Then he popped the lids of turkey dinners of the same labels. I could smell the freshly opened jars from my laptop.

I'm sure I'm not alone in finding baby food disgusting. And, yes, I feed them to my babies (like they're gonna complain). So thanks to Norton, I know to avoid Roundy's grainy, meat-chunkless (there goes another dry heave!) turkey dinner and also to pass up the "sausage in a jar" flavor of Gerber's for the fruity and nicely textured Nature's Best. Nature's Best also had the best squash.

Had Norton really had some sack, he would have sampled other baby food nasties (which, yes, again!, have found their way into my kids' mouths): green beans, those orangy "dinners" involving beef and plain, pureed and jarred poultry -- pink as an undercooked chicken breast.

Which jarred edibles do your kids gobble up while you gag? Have you ever sampled baby food bananas? Doesn't taste a thing like bananas, but man is it good!

I couldn't face the stuff--it all looked awful to me. I made homemade baby foods for the few months before our daughter was able to eat some version of the family's dinner.

I mostly made fruits and veggies (freezing them in ice cube trays and thawing them as needed), but also some grains-and-meat mixtures as she got bigger. She loved all the fruits, orange vegetables, and--this sounds crazy, but it was a favorite--roast duck/lentils/sweet potato.

Homemade all the way, my baby refused the processed gunk in a jar.  Used the Kidco Happy Baby food grinder or food mill (whatever they call it), have recommended it to all my friends. Huge fans. You can get them online at happybabyproducts.com.

Beechnut's Country Breakfast.  Eggs, ham, oatmeal, and apples.  WTF.  Claire can't get enough of it.

She refused to eat anything from Gerber, ever.  I compared jars of Gerber to Beechnut - something like Chicken and vegetables - and Gerber is full of filler and water.  60 calories in a jar of Gerber to 100 in the same size jar of Beechnut?  Nice.  I make most of her food, we just bring out the jars when I forget to make something for the sitter to feed her.

When I had my wisdom teeth out I ate baby food for a week.  It is delicious!  Reminds me of stews and purree soups I eat in France.  They are tasty and spiced nicely.  I would never feed my baby anything I did not taste first. That is just wierd.

My son's first foods were homemade, except when we were travelling. And as an example of what happens when a PhD becomes a SAHM, I was reasonably obsessed with testing commercial baby food to decide which he'd have while we were travelling. To further prove my obsession, I also compelled my husband to do the taste-tests with me. (He's also an academic, so he humoured me.)

Then we moved to Europe. Wow, the commercial food there was incredible! Far more variety in flavours and textures, and most of it is organic.

My kids ate a combination of smushed up food I made and Earth's Best. Some of those Earth's Best selections were really good. The butternut squash bisque was so good I wanted to throw a little salt on it and eat it myself.

I fed my kids Gerbers or Beechnut.  They ate a lot of the veggies and fruits.  The smell of the meat in the others were gross.  Since they both were over 7 months before they ate solids, it wasn't long before we moved from the babyfood to finger food.
