10 Worst Places to Live in the U.S.

Posted by Madeline Holler

There's nothing like raising your kids in one of the 10 most miserable cities in the U.S. There, you get the pleasure of paying really high sales tax, losing your job, probably losing your house and/or having a super long commute. Oh, and becoming the victim of a violent crime.

All that and more was what Forbes magazine used to come up with this year's 10 most squalid -- assuming it had a population of more than about 380,000.

Morning News already revealed the winner (actually, loser, right?): Stockton, Calif., which pushed Detroit off the misery pedastal, where that city sat at the top last year.

Here's the rest of the list.

2. Memphis (crime really did this city in)

3. Chicago (now that the Obamas are no longer there ...)

4. Cleveland, Ohio (the magazine cites snow, but come on. It's Cleveland! Wait, didn't Cleveland use to rock?)

5. Modesto, Calif. (unemployment and high car theft)

6. Flint, Michigan (unemployment, unemployment, unemployment)

7. Detroit (no longer the most miserable ... so this is actually good new for the Motor City.)

8. Buffalo, N.Y. (too much snow and a shrinking population)

9. Miami, Fla. (27 percent of the cities mortgages are delinquent. Uh oh.)

10. St. Louis, Mo. (ranked in the bottom half in all the categories. Still, the Arch! What about the Arch?)

Do you call these cities home? Really, are they so bad?

I lived in Chicago. Yeah, the humidity in the summer was so bad that the moment I toweled off after a shower was the only 90 seconds I spent dry for the rest of the day. And yes, winter lasts until June. But still, hell of a town.

Yes, stockton is HORRIBLE!!!  My family used to live about 15 minutes outside of the city.  My husband worked in south Stockton for almost 2 years and everyday there was either a murder or car chase around his work.  You can't even go to the malls there anymore because of car theift and violence.  It's so sad because there are some really nice looking areas, but Section-8 has given most of those homes away and brought down the "look" of the neighborhoods.  The city keeps trying to re-build and make the "bad" areas look better but it's completly useless.  Gangs tag all over buildings and the homeless line the streets.  It was after our house was broken into for the 3rd time that we sold our home (waaay below market) and got the heck outta dodge!!

I grew up in Chicago. I do think it is a great city. I wonder if the Cubs have were factored into the misery rating. I know they have made me miserable my whole life!

I lived in Memphis, hated, and loved it.  I think it qualifies though because the actual city of memphis is poor poor poor.  Huge percentage of people on welfare, etc.  I went to a police academy graduation in the 90's and heard that Memphis ranked in the top 3 for murder, rape and car theft (something like that).  BUT, so many people live outside the city limits, and I bet they were not included in these statistics. And, why did I love it?  Only one reason...great music everywhere.   Why did I hate it?  Most racist place I had ever lived.  Horrible.

So baffled by the inclusion of St. Louis, a really wonderful place to live and raise a kiddo. Lots of big-city amenities (many of them available to residents at no- or low-cost), minus the big-city hassles.

Amanda, I know! I was totally shocked to see St. Louis since  I thought it was one of the easiest cities to live in: cost of living not too high, lots of great restaurants, it's old and beautiful and all historical AND just like you said, tons of stuff to do for free. Plus, very kid/stroller friendly.

The survey put a lot of emphasis on traffic and sales tax ... maybe that's what did the city in? It was the very bottom of the list so ...

Thanks for the comments!

I used to work in stockton, and even being there just 8 hours a day was enough.

But the Big Cleve? Must be a misprint, right?

Wow.  I live in Stockton and have for 19 years.  I don't think it's as bad as all that. I depends on where you go.  The crime was down..I thought.  lol

I have a great job...only commute 10 feet to my home office and we have never been the victim of a crime. (knock on wood)

I will probably die here......in about 50 years!

I live in Chicago and LOVE it. The fact that people still flock here despite the ridiculously high taxes, the long, grueling winters, and the often-frustrating public transit situation (the 3 negative factors they cite) speaks volumes. All of those things are true and it's STILL an amazing place to live, work, and raise a family.

The CITY of St. Louis is distinct from St. Louis County and the surrounding metropolitan area.  The metro area offers affordable housing; the Zoo/Museum district enables free admission to many of St. Louis's finest attractions, including a world class zoo; the St. Louis area offers many fine restaurants, activities, schools and neighborhoods.  BUT, the city of St. Louis is a whole different ball game, what with crime, crumbling neighborhoods and infrastructure, and a pathetic public school system.  I wouldn't want to live in the city of St. Louis either.

Any "worst places" list that left off Houston, TX is laughable.

Crime rate spiraling, no public transportation, traffic mess, UGLY UGLY place...

I live in Lodi, work in Stockton. It is what you make of it! Born and raised in Chicago and at least Stockton knows it sucks. Chicago keeps fooling itself into thinking it is great.  Much better weather here and people are generally nicer. Main gripes are crime and bums but those are everywhere unless you live North Dakota.

Going from what Cheri said, yes, Memphis is a love/hate relationship for the most part.  I think its crime and racial divides are inexcusable, BUT Memphis is doing some amazing things all over the city.  There are some great organizations that are doing their part to combat the stereotypes of the city and its people.  There is always music venues with great bands any day of the week.  There are some great parks (and some bad ones, but hey that is every where).  I think people should not be so quick to judge the Home of Graceland and the Blues.  If you live here and are not surprised, I suggest you start seeking out those great things in Memphis to be a part of and stop complaining and DO something about it.
