Health Scam: Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Posted by Kate Tuttle

They've been around for ages, but they've gotten slicker at marketing themselves, and now they have college health services pimping for them as well. Calling themselves "crisis pregnancy" or "pregnancy resource" centers, they are sham clinics that pretend to offer comprehensive reproductive health services, but really exist only to try to shame and scare women out of having abortions. And far from being protected from them, women in college are being sent to them by a source they ought to be able to trust: their university health services centers.

According to a new study from the Feminist Majority Foundation (and reported online by Ms. magazine's newswire), nearly half of the university and college health centers surveyed routinely referred college women to these centers, rather than to reputable clinics or hospitals. Once there, women facing unexpected (and often unwanted) pregnancies find this kind of treatment:

...many of these centers attempt to coerce and intimidate women out of considering abortion as an option, and prevent women from receiving neutral and comprehensive medical advice. They are typically run by anti-abortion volunteers who are not licensed medical professionals. Crisis pregnancy centers also often spread false information, such as the disproved and discredited claims that abortions increase the risk of breast cancer and frequently cause mental trauma.

The study looked at nearly 400 college health services, which together serve around 34% of the nation's student population.

Even creepier, these centers are now reaching out to students directly on Facebook and MySpace, advertising their fake services and advocating for inclusion on referral lists given by colleges. Funny how these groups, which claim to be protecting the innocent unborn, have no problem at all deceiving and preying upon the most innocent and naive among those of us who have already been born.

Many colleges and universities don't cover the cost of birth control - of any form - through their health insurance (and in some cases where they do, students have the right to receive back that part of their insurance premium - often amounting to under $1 - that would go to such services).  I'm hardly surprised.

Attention employees: pro-lifer cleanup in aisle 7...

If you're not creeped out by people who claim to be people of faith telling blatant lies to vulnerable teenagers, I'm not sure what would creep you out. I mean, really - doesn't your religion demand truthfulness? Do the ends justify the means, and how far does that go?

The point is not that they are pro-life or pro-choice here.

The point is that these girls are being denied a fundamental human right of fair and non-biased medical care.

There is plenty creepy with making a cottage industry of preying on scared young women in order to fulfill a personal agenda, irregardless of the cost to their VICTIMS.

I get soooo tired of reading blogs from people spouting off their views quoting "facts" and it's obvious they never check out the facts for themselves!  I HAVE a copy of the article. It's 398 health centers (not 400).  The article NEVER refers to those 398 servicing 34% of the nation's student population. The article does say that 48% of the 398 colleges surveyed  refer to these "pregnancy centers."  So, that means 191.04 are referring.  Of those referring, the article says 81% ALSO refer to facilities that provide birth control/abortion.  SO...THAT MEANS THAT ONLY 36.3 OF THE 398 COLLEGES SURVEYED ARE LIMITING STUDENT'S CHOICES BY ONLY REFERRING TO THESE CENTERS! Hardly a number to be threatened by!  By the way, there are  4096 colleges in the US (Chronicle of Higher Education) so it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY that the "400" colleges YOU refer to support 34% of the nation's college population.  INVESTIGATE the FACTS and use your brain to intelligently think for YOURSELF instead of believing everything everyone tells you please!

Jnet, I'm not sure what your point is, but mine is just what I stated: that thousands of college-aged women are being denied compassionate, honest, and medically responsible care due to the referrals to these fake-out "health centers" that exist only to discourage abortion, not to serve anyone's actual health. Please feel free to share your opinion about the topic as much as you want -- but acting like I'm an irresponsible blogger for calling 398 "nearly 400" is just silly.
