Pregnant Man Receiving Death Threats

Posted by Cole Gamble
I guess you could file this under, “Sometimes Human Beings Are Miserable Creatures.” As you probably know, Oregon’s (my neck of the woods) Thomas Beatie, A.K.A The Pregnant Man, is pregnant again. And for this grievous offense, some people want him dead…

Not that death threats are the only troubles Beatie and his wife Nancy have weathered. Of course you have the mockery of kooks, regular citizens and late night talk show hosts. Then you have FOX News. During Beatie’s first pregnancy, a FOX News commentator declared Beatie’s child would be an “Ewok Baby” and that it would be born with a “third eye.” Yep, those words from the reputable, “Fair and Balanced,” journalistic institution that is FOX News.

People are bound to find Beatie and his life weird, perhaps gross, maybe even go so far as to deem it “wrong.” I don’t begrudge regular people for making water cooler talk out of this person’s life; we’re all a little catty deep down. And I’ll admit he played a part in stepping into the spotlight. But death threats? I don’t get why who he is and how he lives his life could make anyone that mad, why they find it so necessary to wipe out all that is unique and interesting about this world. Then again, there’s a lot I don’t get.  I was taught to believe this was a country of individuality, where everyone is free, nay, encouraged to make their own path. So if somebody decides to live a certain way and it doesn’t hurt anyone, who the hell cares?

I'll never understand people who are threatened by anybody who's different. But can I just say that baby is freakin' adorable.

I was taught to believe that too.  But apparently the conservative Christian right was not taught to believe that - they're taught that it's their personal job to save all of us from eternal hellfire by converting us - if not in spirit, by changing the law, so that individuality is no longer possible.  The thing I hate about democracy is the idea that at some point, those guys might win.

Mostly I just feel amazed that he deliberately got pregnant again 4 and a half months after his daughter was born.  Ugh, no time to recuperate at all!

I'm more amazed that they found a doctor willing to inseminate them again so soon! I thought there were a lot of disadvantages to being pregnant back to back.

No sympathy here for media sluts. Pretty much everyone in the public eye--actors, athletes, politicians, singers, whatever--gets threatening letters from fringe whackos. This is part of the choice that Beatie made when he decided to take his story public (again and again and again...) Not excusing the bigots out there, but he knew that they would have plenty to say about his situation (frankly, they're the only reason why it's newsworthy at this point).

I am not at all condoning the violent threats that he has received.  But its a little annoying how much of this he willingly takes to the media.  I personally will not judge him at all for his lifestyle choices or for choosing to have another baby so soon.  But, maybe he should consider protecting his families privacy a little bit and stop whoring out every single part of his pregnancies and family journey to the media.  Also, why is anyone surprised that someone who was born a woman and still has all the necessary female anatomy in order to procreate, can get pregnant?  If he wants to be "normal" and for his children to have a "normal" life, then maybe he should not have national interviews with Barbara Walters.  Just sayin.
