China, what's it going to take to get a little human rights going? I mean, you got the Olympics but refused to let anyone protest. You make all these computers but get pissed when your own citizens use them to express their disagreements with you.
And now, you've got a woman trapped in a hospital awaiting word on whether you'll let her have a third child or whether you'll force her to terminate the pregnancy. Oh, and she's six months along!
The woman, who is Muslim Uighar, has until today to appeal her case. Though China has a famous one-child policy, many couples get around it by (1) paying out huge fines or (2) belonging to an ethnic minority with dwindling populations in the country of 1.3 billion citizens.
From McClatchy News:
China's family-planning policy allows minorities, including Uighurs,
to have more than one child. If minority couples are urban dwellers,
they may have two children, while rural farmers may have three
children. Many majority Han Chinese see those exceptions as unfair.
Arzigul
holds a rural household registration but her husband is registered in
an urban area, creating some legal confusion. Local officials
eventually demanded that she terminate her pregnancy.
Let her go, man. The whole worlds is watching!
