Matt Lauer Talks To Sarah Palin In The Kitchen

Posted by Brett Singer

Sarah Palin did a interview with Matt Lauer on the Today Show and also had dinner with the familySarah Palin is off the campaign trail but not out of the spotlight. Now that she isn't running for anything, she's doing interviews left and right (that's not a political reference, by the way). This morning, NBC aired the first part of Matt Lauer's interview with the Alaska Governor; part two airs tomorrow, and there's even more coming on NBC Nightly News.

Sarah sat down with Matt in Alaska for a traditional interview (as morning news gigs go, I think Matt Lauer has it the worst – dude has to travel a LOT). He also spent some time at the Palin home, sharing a salmon and halibut casserole, which he said was quite tasty.

Some of the video is below (click here if the embed doesn't work).

Here are some highlights:

Matt says that the Palin family was, “down to Earth.” Palin herself is, “a working mom...making dinner for her family.”

As for Governor Palin, she was thrilled to be, “representing middle-class, hardworking American families” as part of the McCampaign. (I'm waiting for a candidate to say that they represent lazy people who don't care about money.) She “did not know” that the media scrutiny would be as intense as it turned out to be, and she was upset about the rumors that Trig was not her son. Still, it was all worth it because, “I knew we were on the right path...offering me and my family in service of my country.”

Todd weighs in, kind of. Asked about how the Palin family dealt with the crazy campaign schedule, the First Dude said, “our family is very adaptable.” As for the criticisms? It's just “part of the business.” It sounds like Sarah was more interested than Todd in tearing some of her critics a new one. Still, the Governor says that it's all, “part of this beast called politics in America.”

So what about all of the post-election mud that's been flying around our heads? And did the McCampaign keep her from doing interviews? Palin doesn't want to get into “inside baseball” with regard to “who was calling the shots in the campaign.” She makes it pretty clear that she, “loves doing interviews” because she wants to tell the American people what she plans to do to/for them. “You have to be able to speak through the media.” Lauer points out that she answered his question, “without answering it.”

Then we hear from Piper. She awkwardly answers Matt's questions about the campaign, saying that the hardest part was going to the rallies. She missed “a lot” of school, and its been hard to catch up now that she's home again. How would she feel about another campaign, like, say, in four years? “I don't know,” is the 7 year old's answer. Then mom jumps in and asks her daughter, “Would you want to do it again, sister?” Piper, without missing a beat, says, “Yes.” (UPDATE: apparently Piper was wearing high heels.)

I have several thoughts about this of course, but one thing comes to mind immediately. Governor Palin expressed frustration with what she calls a “double standard” regarding how the media covers her. “I don’t know if anybody’s asking Barack Obama, for intance, ‘Who did your makeup before you went on stage?’ But they’ve been asking me.” True. But when John McCain goes on Jay Leno tonight, I don't think he's going to be doing a cooking segment. Live by the mixing bowl, die by the mixing bowl, y'know?

Sarah doesn't miss a stage-managing trick: cooking for Matt while talking politics.  "See, America, she can multi-task.  And don't you worry about her gettin' all uppity-like."  She knows a woman's place is still in the kitchen, where Todd doesn't lift a finger to help.  Of course, he carries Trig, but that's just to allay the campaign criticism that the little guy was always carted around by his sisters.  The whole thing makes me think that Sarah should keep on talkin' so America can keep on believing it did the right thing in rejecting her by 7 million votes.

lauram,

Maybe she's had Todd's halibut casserole and knows it's worth the effort to do it herself.

Saw part one this AM with Matt and Sarah in the kitchen. Matt wearing a nice red sweater and Sarah donned, sans apron, in a Saks 5th outfit. Halibut casserole not!! More likely Chili Con Queso, with an extra large helping of tripe.

I think she came off in this interview a lot better than most of her pre-election interviews, frankly; if she'd seemed this relaxed and accessible in September and October, it might have been closer. Not that I don't think she's a raging lunatic; I do. She just seems to be hiding it better now that the pressure is off :-)

I have a big problem, though, with her repeated assertion that she came across poorly in the Katie Couric interview because she was "annoyed" and didn't feel she should have to answer questions she thought were irrelevant or condescending. I can understand that - I bet all the candidates felt annoyed at some point - but she was running for *Vice President of the United States of America*! It was HER job to come across as unflappable, competent, and willing to answer every question in a way that earned the confidence of the American public. I just don't see how "I was annoyed at those stupid questions" is a defense that will play well when she inevitably runs in 2012 - being President involves, I would guess, a lot of very annoying and frustrating scenarios - how would she handle them if she can't handle Katie freakin' Couric?

She did come across as more real in this interview.  It was more interesting to see her and her family in their every-day lives. She is not the monster she (herself, created) by virtue of not thinking clearly about what she was uttering in some of those rallies, but neither is she a darling.  She can cry foul and complain that media are "jerks" or mean spirited, but some of the tactics employed by McPain didn't bode well for a lot of Americans, that need, and want, change.  I blame them both for the breakdown of the campaign.  He looked desperate, she looked like she just "was trying out for Miss V.P, America"

I agree that she came across much better here. I do wonder what restrictions were placed on this interview. As for the complaints about Couric, et al, good points all. How is "what publications do you read" an unfair question?

ARE you kidding me????  Is that a real question?????  DOES THAT SOUND FAMILIAR???  Joe Biden was clearly unhappy with some of his interviewers, so much so that the Obama campaign bannished that t.v. station from any more interviews!  Give me a break here!

Regarding Gov.Palin:

It's apparent Mrs.Palin has done some hard work after so many faux pass but there is no depth. Her bullet fast replies to the medias questions can only be described as nothing less than  a small child being pulled by a 130-pound Rotwiler puppy at dinner time and the American public is the small child. In our slide from hard news reporting to entertainment based, sound byte news,  I believe the American public has a hard time keeping up. However, when Tina Fey does Palin, it's with emphasis to communicate as opposed to the fast talking Palin, delivering what appears to be crisp, confident and intelligent thinking but is not.

For instance, when Palin said she had two speeches in her pocket written with the help of McCain staffers, one if they won and one if they didn't, an inexperienced, and poor manager was revealed. Though surprised at the outcome of her being shutout, on the stage at the concession, it doesn't take a lot to figure out that if they won she most definitely would have been asked to speak but in a loss, probably not.

That said, any manager knows the easiest way to get a difficult person to buckle down and work with speechwriters is to say, "hey, let's get that acceptance speech written baby (!) and Oh, by the way, in the event we don't win let's put a concession speech down as a just in case."

Palin's star quality has blinded 52 million Americans to the truth of what she's truly saying, what she stands for and her readiness to be a heartbeat away from the most important job on earth.

Thank you,

Richard Ostroff

There are so many negative comments about Sarah Palin from people that don't even know her.  She is a very smart women who has been a public servant for the last 14 years and worked very hard to continue her service.  I'd bet none of you making these comments have ever held an office.  It is alot of work.  Why all the vile comments.  You all should be ashamed of yourself.  There is no reason to act like children.

The thing about Palin is that I WANT to like her, but the more I hear her speak, the more I don't like her. One thing that stuck out about the Lauer interview was that she never took any of the blame for losing. According to her, it was everyone's fault but hers, and if she could just say, "Maybe there were things we (McCain and Palin) could have done differently..." I would respect her a whole lot more.
