Odd Couple, Redux

Posted by Amy S.F. Lutz

Everyone knows the first rule of baby naming is, don't set your kids up to be made fun of their entire lives.  Which is why we castigate celebrities for naming their kids Zuma, and Kal-El, Pilot and Apple.

But just as important as what you name each individual kid is how your kids' names sound together.  One of my husband's best friends is named Randolph, his brother is named Andrew, and the parents swore they never thought their boys would be called Randy and Andy.

So, Gillian Anderson, what in God's name were you thinking when you named your new baby, born on October 15, Felix?  Is it possible that neither you, nor baby daddy Mark Griffiths, has ever heard of the Odd Couple?  Because Anderson's other son, who's almost two, is named - you guessed it - Oscar.

Perhaps Anderson was too busy being clever to notice.  X-Files fans immediately pointed out that Felix's name is an anagram of X-File.  Ooooh, spooky.

I recently met a mom on the playground who introduced me to her daughter, Ruby.  Fine.  Then she told me she had an 8-year-old son named, no kidding, Max.  I managed to keep my mouth shut, but just barely.

And of course I've heard of the Odd Couple.  And you'd have to assume that anyone who works in TV has too.

JLo's twins are Max and Emme - Dragontale twins!  The thing is, even if Erni (first poster) is a lithe young 20something, Gillian Anderson is 40... just a touch older than myself.  So given that Odd Couple was a staple (though maybe in reruns, I don't really know) when I was a little girl AND that she's been in television for 20? years, it is, well, odd, to have never heard of it (I read this morning that she had never heard of the show so she didn't realize her sons' would be named after them.)

It's only in very occasional reruns. I'm a teenager, though, and I know about it through my dad...I can't be the only one. And even if their friends never make fun of them, I bet the kids won't enjoy comments from every other adult they meet.
