GOP Shows Obama With Fried Chicken and Watermelon

Posted by JeanneSager

The head of a group of California Republicans who handed out fliers depicting Barack Obama with a bucket of fried chicken, watermelon and ribs apparently thinks we're all a bunch of newborns.

Diane Fedele, the president of the San Bernardino County Republican group claimed there was no racist intent behind the fliers - "it was just food to me." WTF??

It's just food alright. Food most often related to African-American culture, food most often derided for its popularity among poor Southerners who just so happen to be black. Fedele said she received the picture in an e-mail and printed it out to respond to an Obama comment that he doesn't look like other presidents.

"It was strictly an attempt to point out the outrageousness of his statement. I really don't want to go into it any further," Fedele told a local newspaper.

So he says he doesn't look like other presidents and to show it's outrageous you play up his race, which, by the way, is one way Obama is significantly different from past presidents?

No, Ms. Fedele, I wasn't born yesterday, but I'm not stuck in a generation full of people afraid to elect a black man as president either.

Are you voting for him strictly because he's black? Because you know, sweety, that in itself is racist as well.

dfff, nowhere in the post did Ms. Sager (sweety to you, I guess) so much as imply that she would vote for Senator Obama because he is black. It's quite obvious to anyone with reasonable reading comprehension skills that she is saying she would never let his race keep her from voting for him, because that would be racist.

As for those CA republicans, they are just like so many republicans everywhere. I know I shouldn't be surprised by the level of sick bigotry in the country, but haven't we come any farther than this?

Good grief people.  Since when does eating fried chicken, watermelon and ribs equal black?!  I'd say eating fried chicken and ribs at the same time makes me picture someone overweight, which he is not.

What do you have against fried chicken?

(Oh, and I'm sick of people telling me if I don't vote for Obama I'm a racist and if I don't vote for Palin - um, she aint even running for president people! - I'm not a woman.  Stupid people.  I'll vote the way I vote because I hope it will be the best for the country.  Deal with it.)

Oh, and "sweety" means you have to be, wait how old are you BettyWu?  People who use that word to me aren't old, they're the annoyingly perky, but not cheerleader, girls with curly hair and such.  Get your generalizations straight, would ya?

Some of you up above post exhibits thathave all the characteristics of the racists you belittle, when you so casually toss a generation of 'freedom fighters' into a bag you label 'racists and bigots'.

I'm 70 years old, probably the same age group as the grand father referred to by BettyWu.  I clearly remember my generation dying, jailed, beaten, at places like Selma and Birmingham, where the 'white' blood flowed into the same gutters as 'black' blood, as 'brown', 'yellow', and 'pink'.

The use of watermelon and fried chicken imagery, when paired with a Black person, is historically very racist. It's an old stereotype: that Black people love fried chicken and watermelon...along with not being able to swim, and other such foolishness. This woman knew what she was doing.  It was a calculated, racially motivated, depiction. It would be like showing an Asian candidate with an eggroll or a Hispanic candidate with a taco. It's a stereotypical characterization.  And as much as I'd like to believe that we are all beyond this sort of behavior, I know that's simply not the reality.

C, you are either incredibly stupid, or you have a reason for not wanting to believe/admit that this flier was racist. I do not  think for a minute that you are a racist if you don't vote for Obama. That is ridiculous. I think you are a racist based on your comment, though.

The blatant racism in the GOP campaign is disgusting. The should be ashamed of themselves for the propaganda that they are generating. Depicting an educated, wise, highly intelligent, black, presidential candidate with a bucket of chicken and watermelon is incredibly disrespectful, and totally racist. Allowing voters to believe the assumption that he is a terrorist, or Muslim is fear mongering, unacceptable, and also completely racist. Mccain needs to step up and make a public statement, for the respect of his future in the senate, and say that Barack is not a Muslim, that is not a terrorist, and apologize for allowing this propaganda to continue. Diane Fedele should be ashamed of herself, of her party, and she should apologize and step down, or be removed from her post. She is clearly uneducated, irresponsible, and racist, and should be fired for her actions.

Take a look at the actual picture: www.rightpundits.com

Can anyone seriously claim that it isn't racist?  It's depicting Obama with ribs, fried chicken, kool aid, and watermelon.

I went and looked at the picture (thanks ShaLO)! It's totally a racist manuever. Yeah, the chicken, ribs, watermelon and Kool Aid is totally racist. Anyone who thinks otherwise, is either fooling themselves or hiding their own racism!
