They Say: That Thing About BPA Bottles Being Safe? Uh, Kidding!

Posted by Madeline Holler

On behalf of plastic-pushing parents everywhere, I'd like to say to government scientists: make up your damn minds!

The latest out of Washington is that, yes, once again, there is cause for concern about baby's brain development in children who consume food and drink through plastics containing BPA (bisphenol-A for those raising their children under a rock).

Just weeks ago, the FDA announced there's nothing to be worried about; there, there, silly mamas, those studies were done on rats, you're not raising rats, a little BPA never hurt no one. Well! A report that came out this week now says there is some conern that BPA exposure can cause developmental problems in brains and hormonal systems of infants and children.

From MSNBC:

Program repeats initial findings issued in April. The group — which includes scientists from the National Institutes of Health and other agencies — said bisphenol's risks to humans cannot be ruled out, but acknowledged its concerns are based on the findings of studies on animals.

A final report from the FDA is expected later this year. At this point, though, who do you even believe?

Considering how powerful the corporate interests behind BPA are, I think it's just common sense to avoid it if you can - if it IS dangerous, we're not going to know for sure until at least a few more years, and who wants to gamble with their child's health for the sake of convenient bottles?

I don't mean to sound like I'm taking the side of the Big Bad BPA-Manufacturers, as I'm definitely not, but not only were the studies performed on lab rats rather than humans, I believe the leaching occurred when the plastics were subjected to far higher temperatures than a baby bottle ever would be (even including boiling/dishwaher for sterilization and god forbid briefly microwaving to warm contents).

Will I get BPA-free bottles for baby #2?  Yes.  Do I think baby #1 will have any kind of developmental issues from his 12-month stint on BPA-laden bottles?  No.
