Which Netflix Movie Have You Had the Longest?

Posted by Madeline Holler

The online magazine Slate wants to know which Netflix movie you've kept the longest. Oh, man, now I have to face my demons?

Because what I thought would deliver my family from overdue fines at the public library and Blockbuster has actually been something of a burden on my psyche.

Now, instead of returning unwatched movies to avoid hefty late payments (since there are none), I hold on to movies all sealed up in that little package out of guilt, because I haven't watched them. That little red envelope just sits there taunting me.  We have had The Departed going on two months now. Why can't I just let go and send it back? Maybe I will. But you go first.

Tell us -- can you bear to return an unwatched Netflix movie? Which one have you held on to the longest?

I can't remember the name of the movie I had the longest because I didn't even watch it, but we had it about a month.  After that, my husband made a rule that if we don't watch a movie within 3 days it goes back.  There are many times a movie seems like a good idea at the time, but after a day with the kids, work and getting everyone ready for school, my brain does not want to watch the chick flick or the drama.  So, many movies that make their way to my mailbox get sent back.  I have since switched to the cheapest netflix membership level because I felt so guilty.

I've held on to "The Notebook" for about two months before returning it, unwatched. It was one of those films everyone recommended I see, but I really had no desire to sit through it and cry. I've also returned "Motorcycle Diaries" unwatched, but only because I wanted to continue watching the 4-disc "Mad Men" Season 1. I still plan on putting "Motorcycle Diaries" back on my queue, though.

Most of the movies we keep for too long are movies my husband has asked for and never gets around to watching.  I've just taken to quietly sending them back after a few weeks.  If he asks for them again, we can always request them again!
