Because It's Always Better To Blame the Messenger

Posted by Adrienne Martini

On August 19, mom and blogger Kelby Carr went to Wal-mart to pick up school supplies for her daughter. Like most parents making the crayon run, Carr grabbed the list that the store provided. Only that list turned out to be not only wrong, but full of items that her kid's school prohibited.

That is only the beginning of the story, however.

The tale of her trip starts here. But because no one on the internet -- let alone those who read "momblogs," can take a one person's story as just one person's story, commenters took Carr to task for pretty much everything that has ever happened in the free world.

The moral of the story? Apparently, it's get your supply list from the teacher -- and keep your mouth shut.

God, Wal-Mart sucks.  And all the zombies that shop there too.  And my stepfather worked there for 30 years.  They're not so nice to their employees either.

Hello. Thanks for this hilarious post. For anyone else who would like to blame me for everything that has happened in the free world, you may stand in line right behind my kids. The wait could be long. LOL.

Anyway, I couldn't have said it all better. Great post!

Geez, her school list is pretty light.  Our official school list looked almost exactly like the Walmart list. Maybe the kindergarden class her child attends does not do very many art projects or writing.  What a dull school.  Our kids had to take things like pencils, glue, markers, crayons to keep in their cubbies.  Prohibited does not mean Walmart put dangerous things on their list as this post implies by the way. Prohibited just means they said not to send glue cause they dont need any.

Yeepers, Cassie - maybe it's not a dull school, maybe they just already had the stuff, no?

And Kelby - your "stand in line right behind my kids" line made my morning.  Thanks!

FYI- there is a disclaimer on her school list as to why a parent should not send crayons, scissors, etc, etc - Because the school supplies them for all kids to use and the individual children will not have desk space to store their own stuff.  Makes sense to me.  My children's K classes did require that they bring in a Wal-mart type of assortment, but we were explicity instructed NOT to label the supplies because they were to be pooled by the teacher and put in bins in the middle of the room for kids to share.  In upper grades it's a little trickier because kids are expected to bring in about half personal (desk) items and half pooled items (Purell, Kleenex, etc.)  I just think Wal-mart is lazy and looking for a quick little scam by not being clear that they have put together a generic "suggested items" type list.  Our local Target has lists that are labeled by school, which is so handy.  They are accurate (i.e. Minneapolis ABC School 4th Grade has its own little slot & the other nearby schools have their slots.  Smart little system...
