McCann’s Cleared As Suspects in Daughter’s Disappearance

Posted by Cole Gamble

Due to a lack of sufficient evidence, Portuguese police are saying there will likely be no charges against Kate and Gerry McCann in the disappearance of their almost 4-year-old daughter Madeleine over a year ago.

While the McCanns look to be cleared as suspects, there is still no doubt as to their gross negligence…

In their original statement, the McCanns said they left Madeleine unsupervised in a ground floor holiday apartment with her 2-year-old twin siblings while the adults dined at a restaurant 130 yards away. The night of Madeleine’s disappearance, the McCanns tucked their kids in at 6pm; left the apartment unlocked and toddled off to have dinner with friends. When they returned 4 hours later they found Madeleine gone and a bedroom window open.

The story may not be over yet. A glimmer of hope lives in that Madeleine could still be out there. Despite their apparent exoneration, I should think the McCanns guilt weighed heavier than any possible legal trouble. To a small degree we have all done this, taken our kids to the park, got wrapped up in conversation and took our eyes off the kids for a moment. And who hasn’t lost their child at a department store? What the McCanns did however, was more willful. That night they thought what they did was safe and it is tempting for any of us to think so, that we could just leave our kids for a blessed moment of peace. This is a frightening example of how parenting is a 24-hour a day job.

I think, too, the fact that this was a pattern of leaving the children alone at about the same time every night totally made it easier for the kidnapper(s).  When we take our eyes off our children at the park, it is only for moments, not for hours, and I'm assuming not at the same time everyday.  (Yes, I realize that anything can happen in those moments, however short.)

I've been fortunate to never have lost my children at a department store- I'm much too paranoid to lose site of them and/or contact in public.

I am concerned that other caregivers won't be as vigilant. Since they are in daycare and often stay over with their grandparents, I'm not with them 24 hours a day. There's a lot of faith involved in trusting someone else with your kids...

Im with ya Nicole. I'm as paranoid as they come. My eyes are GLUED to those kids when out in public.

i do understand that some people are little more laid back though, and obviously thats fine but leaving your children alone in an unlocked apartment while your out drinking loads of wine for hours is just plain and simple bad parenting. at least in that instance. I dont care if you could see the apartments back window from where you were sitting or whatever, it was a STUPID thing to do. How could ANYBODY think that was a good idea?! They were vacationing so its not like they knew and trusted their neighbors to watch out for anything.

This whole thing makes me very upset and im frightened for that poor little girl.

About Cole Gamble

Cole Gamble is a writer in the environs of Portland, Oregon where he has two children, one he calls “Jillian” and the other he simply refers to as “The Beef.” His revolutionary parenting technique is a three-pronged system consisting of A) wrestling children for fun and profit; B) convincing his daughter she is a robot; and C) resisting the urge to beat up other four-year-olds when they tease his kids. Propagation of aforementioned children was assisted by his wife, Nicole, who is gorgeous but ironically hates being photographed. His writing has appeared in print, on various Internets and been transmitted into the air through the magic of the radio. Currently he is working on an evil self-help book titled Improve Your Life Or Die.
