Is it fair to take pictures of Britney's kids?

Posted by Brett Singer

You may have heard about the photographs of Britney Spears smoking while 2-year-old Sean Preston was playing with her cigarette lighter. Well, the actual photo doesn't quite show that. Here it is:

Britney Smoky

Now, far be it from me to disagree with the celebrity media machine, but this doesn't look as bad as it sounds. In this pic she looks to be taking the cigarettes away from her child. That would be the right thing to do. The better thing to do would be to not smoke at all, and especially not in front of your kids. Second-hand smoke is very dangerous, especially to little lungs. It also makes me wonder if she was smoking while pregnant, which would be much worse. My guess – and I have nothing to back this up – is that she probably was. As a former smoker, I know how hard it is to quit, and it looks to me like the Britster is quite the nicotine addict.

Here's the part that gets me: the photos were taken at her house. Why? Presumably a photog with a mega-ultra-zoom lens – a "Pavarotti", as El Federline famously referred to them on his ill-fated rap album – was suspended from a helicopter or something and took the shot through her window or on her balcony.

She's a celebrity, and over 18 (although emotionally she might be, like, 12, but let's not go there). But her kids aren't. Not to sound like a celebrity defending dipstick ("LEAVE...BRITNEY...ALONE!"), but maybe there should be a law that prevents the kids from being photographed, at least when they're at home. As someone points out over at MomLogic, they didn't ask to be in this bizarre situation.

There are celebrities whose children you almost never see candid pictures of – Madonna, Howard Stern, Christie Brinkley, and I'm sure there are dozens more that I can't think of at the moment. Of course, those people aren't the unbelievable mess that Brit appears to be. At best, this photo shows poor judgment on her part, not only the smoking but also hanging out with her kid in front of an open window where a sleazoid photographer can get a clear shot. Um, curtains? A really high hedge? Move someplace else?

Of course, if nobody wanted to see the pictures, they wouldn't be worth anything, and photographers wouldn't take them. But that's a different topic.

Here are the rest of the photos. Hey, at least she looks pretty good in her bikini.

She did smoke while pregnant. That is why ou always saw her in public chewing gum, it kept her from losing her mind until she got a cig.  You relly think this person cared enough about her unborn child to stop smoking?

It's not for us to judge if she smoked during pregnancy or not... it's also not for us to judge if her kid picks up a lighter.  She is allowed to live her life within the limits of the law.  IMO the paparazzi should back off and quit baiting her for failure.  I am not a big Brittany fan, she has made lots of mistakes but being criticized for something that happened in her own home is just wrong.  I certainly wouldn't want a camera following me around nitpicking every mistake I make as a first time mom.  And smoking in front of your kids, while I don't agree with it, is something done by half the nation.

I'm kind of with Jessi here - I don't endorse smoking, I certainly don't endorse smoking around kids, and I think most moms should be strongly encouraged to get whatever help they need not to smoke while pregnant.  However, nicotene addiction is incredibly strong - there was that whole experiment in, if I recall correctly, Mexico, where people had bits of their brains removed to control the addiction - to no avail.  While no one would recommend it, the truth is, plenty of kids grow up with smoking parents. I myself grew up with two, not to mention smoking aunts, cousins, grandmothers.  And I made it OK.  If she's not teaching the kid to smoke, this seems like a pretty average American thing to be doing, rather than some celebrity crash and burn.  (rant - And hey, aren't all the obesiphobes going to congratulate her for losing weight? Smoking helps with that, surely all those people really should be proud of her for modeling healthy behavior for her kid - after all, we all know that all that counts for health is dropping those pounds! /rant)

Whether she's over 18 and a celebrity or not, NOBODY should be taking pictures of someone while they are in their private home without them knowing. That is one of the most disgusting things I can think of. If it were anyone else, wouldn't it be classified as stalking?

Oh yeah, thank goodness she looks "pretty good" in her bikini.  That's so important to her mothering.  Boy, I must be a failure because I've never looked even "pretty good" in a bikini.

No wonder this poor girl is barely holding on to her sanity. Can you imagine what it's like to be photographed on your own freaking patio and having the photos published internationally? I don't know why that's not illegal.

While smoking in front of your kids definitely isn't a good idea, I kind of feel bad for her about the lighter thing.  I used to smoke and somehow my niece found my lighter every time she was over my house.  They have like, radar for them.

So her kid grabbed it and she was watching closely enough to get it away from him immediately.  With kids that small you basically spend all your time taking things away from them, that's why you have to watch them so closely.  I don't think the fact that he grabbed the lighter, or that she forgot to put it out of reach makes her a bad mom.  If it wasn't a lighter it would be something else.  Presumably next time she'll put it up higher.  And then he'll grab her cell phone and start calling people.

Poor Britney.  One of those photos is of her kissing her child.  But the other ones are the ones that get the attention.

Mom2Two... I thought the same thing!  Why isn't that picture on all the news mags or media feeds??  I thought it quite loving and an embrace I often have with my son.
