They Say: Use All-Natural Bug Spray that works

Posted by Brett Singer

Herbal ArmorThe worst thing about going outside in the summer is the bugs. When its hot, you can always drink more water, take a shower, hire some local kids to fan you... wait, scratch that last one. But with bugs, they bite, and that itchy gift stays with you long after you go inside. It's even more difficult to protect your kids since they tend to be having too much fun to notice when a flock of horseflies are attacking.

We all want to keep chemicals off of our kids' bodies as much as possible. The thing about Deet is, it works. New York Magazine points to a product called Herbal Armor that is relatively cheap (the mag says $8.99, but it's less at Amazon, although shipping adds a lot) and is also, they claim, sweat-proof. So you slap it on and go. It's all-natural, so no worries about junior growing a third arm out of his back as a result of too much Deet-exposure. I haven't tried it, but I'm going to look for it in stores and report back. If anyone has used this stuff, let us know if it works.

With all the environmental crap our kids and grandkids are exposed to daily, how much can a little very effective DEET hurt. Especially since it's effective.

When I was a tiny tot in the early seventies, a neighbor mom doused her kids and me in Vanilla Extract to keep the skeeters away.  I recall that it worked and we smelled divine... Of course this is also a very expensive method, but probably harmless... unless the alcohol content does something.  Hm... Come to think of it, I was a rather happy, uninhibited child...

This sounds like BS to me.  They don't even list their ingredients.  They even admit that the effectiveness wears off after three hours.

If you're looking for a safe long-lasting Deet-free alternative, try a product with Picaridin.  Cutter Advanced is a good option.  The people at Deet deny that there is anything wrong with their product, of course.  You can click on my name to check out their response to my post about Deet-free bug sprays.

We have used Herbal Armour in the past and it works well but there is something else with a purple bottle and a yellow? label that works better.  I'm not holding out - we're on vacation w/o it now or I'd tell you the name.  I like it better - lasts longer and works for the nasty DC area mosquitos that carry west nile virus.
