Baby Born Drunk

Posted by Cole Gamble

I, like anyone else, enjoy a drink now and then. But I usually wait until after 5p.m. or until, you know, after I've been born.

Clearly one infant girl couldn't wait to tie one on because she came into the world totally smashed. How drunk was this newborn? Try three times the legal limit (provided she came out of the womb driving an El Camino).

A Polish baby girl recently came in to the world with a .29 blood alcohol level. To put that in perspective, that level would be like you drinking 2 and 1/3 bottles of wine. As you can imagine, the mom of this little Dean Martin reincarnation showed up to the delivery room with a few belts in her. Or a dozen, but who is counting.

Suffice to say, the mother may be facing jail time. Luckily, doctors see no harmful effects on the child yet and are hopeful she will not exhibit any in the future.  Remember pregnant ladies, you can have a glass of wine now and then, not 5.

No, you CANT have a glass of wine now and then. Pregnant women should not drink at all. It only takes one drink to have a child born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Kaycee, link with that information, please?  Because that is contrary to everything I have ever read about FAS.

.29 on an adult is bad ... And Dwtintx, don't hold your breath on that source - it doesn't exist.

I'm sorry Kaycee, but I heard from at least five docs (throughout four pregnancies) and numerous nurses/midwives that an occasional glass of wine would do nothing bad to my fetus.  I rarely partook, but I'll admit that at Christmas dinner I had a half glass of wine with my roast during each of my pregnancies.  And I'd have a swig of hubby's wine or beer when out for dinner now and then.  Not sure where you're getting your info...

Isn't wine good for inducing labor? Maybe she really wanted that baby out. Although I'm thinking that idea came to her after the first 2 or 3 drinks, and then she tied one on for get the baby out.

And I have to agree with everyone else, Kaycee, your fear-based reply is severely lacking in facts. None of us think we should drink much during our pregnancies, but a drink or 3 during the entire 9 months will not irreparably harm the baby. The entire lifetime after the baby is born where the mother holds everything against the poor child because of what she had to give up will cause said harm.

Sorry me all you want, but I am a nurse and a doula. The truth is we dont know how much alcohol can cause FAS, and you would have to be a damn selfish mother to take the chance.

Oh, your sources, sorry. Is the CDC or American Academy of Pediatrics enough? www.cdc.gov/.../default.htm

Sorry for the soapbox but I have a degree in disability studies and can not tell you the numerous FAS children I have worked with that the mother stated she only had one glass.

Kaycee, has it ever occurred to you that some of those mothers might have had more than one drink, but chose to lie to make themselves seem less horrible?

I don't think drinking during pregnancy is a great idea, but I also don't believe that one glass can cause FAS.

Omigosh. I do hope the mom's not drinking for the duration of her pregnancy. Good thing the baby's doing fine.

I did have one drink of red wine but it's just a small portion. :)

Why chance it at all? I have never been that tempted while pregnant to have a drink. It's never been worth it.
