Woman Dangles Baby Outside Moving Car

Posted by Jen Chaney

Generally speaking, despite what some of the commenters on my recent Suri Cruise post might say, I try to be non-judgmental about other people's parenting choices. But I can't be impartial about this woman in New Zealand, who dangled her one-year-old baby outside the window of a moving car for no apparent reason. I mean, that's just stone-cold, straight-up stupid.

Evidently the 21-year-old mom, whose name has been withheld, was on vacation with friends. They were driving along a gravel road at about 30 km per hour, or about 18.6 miles per hour. Since safety clearly was paramount, one of the friends was lying on top of the car, holding down an inflatable bed. At some point, the mom thought it would be fun to hold the infant under the arms and dangle the babe's feet near the road, which she did for about ten seconds. A witness -- who undoubtedly thought, "Wow, this makes Michael Jackson's baby-dangling episode look remarkably rational and smartly executed" -- called the cops.

The mom's only defense: "I just didn't think." Well, at least she's honest.

She is due to be sentenced next week and a judge promised she won't get off easily. I have to believe this young mother isn't malicious but is just acting her age -- which, again, is 21 -- and didn't consider the consequences of her behavior. Fortunately her child survived and will have an awesome story to hold over his/her mother's head for decades to come.

acting her age? What, like an adult?

No, she clearly was not.

MOST 21 year olds are not THAT stupid

I'm sorry, but we are constantly rolling back the age at which we hold adults responsible. A pre-teen could tell you that holding a child out the window of a moving car was not a wise decision.

My sister is a 21 year old mom and in some respects, a better mother than a few older moms I know. Don't insult her and every other 21 year old's intelligence with the "acting her age" label. Your earlier call, "straight up stupid" was much more accurate.

I also think the acting her age comment was odd.  At 21 you can vote (!), own property, legally marry, purchase alcohol and firearms and serve in the armed forces.  By 21 my mm had three kids and a college degree she earned while working and raising us.  I think the truth here is the woman was selfish, probably stoned, reckless and stupid.

I'm 21 and pregnant. I'll be 22 when I have my child, and I can assure you, I know waaaaaay better than to hold a baby out of a car period, let alone a moving one. I think it's a bit offensive to call this 'acting her age'. I totally agree with the stupid verdict, though, and I'm glad the judge is going to throw the book at her.

When I am wrong, I'll admit it. The acting her age thing was an offhanded comment that I should not have made. It drove me nuts when I was that age and writers said things like that. Lesson learned.
