How To Pick A Fight, in Five Easy Steps

Posted by Adrienne Martini

Step 1: Write a story about Similac Organic Formula and how it contains sucrose, which is, essentially, cane sugar. Mention, too, that most formulas use milk sugar, which is far less sweet than cane sugar.

Step 2: Quote pediatricians who are concern that sucrose early in life may be connected with obesity, cavities and countless other undesirable conditions.

Step 3: Fail to mention breastfeeding and how it is the best thing since sliced bread, electricity and orgasms combined.

Step 4: Open comments.

Step 5: Watch fur fly

I'm getting a bit bored with these posts which imply (or say outright) "Oh no, now those nazi lactivists are going to come after me". In my opinion, it's getting old, and judging by the fact that a lot of posts on breastfeeding these days get no comments at all, I'm not the only one. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe this post will spark a wild debate, but I really don't think so. I think strollerderbyers (like my new word?)can start posting about breastfeeding without acting as if all their crazy readers are going to flip out at them.

How did this lactivist craze get born in the first place?  I mean, it's your body, shouldn't you be able to do do what you want?

My wife struggled for WEEKS to get our son to latch, wouldn't happen.  So she pumped.  FOR 6 MONTHS! At least 2hrs extra every day hooked up like a dairy cow.

I cant think of anyone who would CONSCIOUSLY choose not to breastfeed.  I mean, who wants to pump, or pay $30/can for food for your son when it's free from your body?

Lactation Nazis need to chill.the.f*.out.

Step 2a: Mention that formula cans may leak unsafe amounts of Bisphenol-A.

As soon as I saw that article posted on the NYT website on Sunday evening, I knew it would bring out the nip-nazi's. Simply put, the article wasn't *about* breastfeeding, it was *about* formula. But see, there's a rule that you can't mention formula without the qualifying statement that "breast is best/formula is poison."

I'm about to be a new mother any day now, and it's this kind of attitude that is so prevalent by self-described lactivists that turn me off. One poster on the NYT site had the perfect comment, "It seems choice ends at birth."

DSF, I think you missed the point of this post - it was referring to a nytimes article about sucrose-containing formulas, and the debate that ensued over that article, not saying that this post would spark a debate itself.

Step 2b: forget to mention it only affects liquid formula in cans, not powdered.

bz, seriously, we're proud of your wife, but sometimes it harder than that, and your post is exactly the problem about lactivists - everybody can't not comment on how easy breastfeeding is because of just their experience. If you don't want to see anymore, stop being part of the problem. You comments are not a solution.

Actually, it's the best thing since BEFORE sliced bread and electricity. Not sure about orgasms.

Sorry, I couldn't resist ;-D

Sad that we have come to this. The article is about different kinds of sugars in formula, not about breastmil vs formula or anything else to do with breastfeeding.  People just can't miss a chance to jump up on their soap box and lecture the world, can they?

So, we are not allowed to even discuss formula anymore?  Regardless of who may or may not like it, parents who formula feed have a right to read articles about it and discuss it without constanly being beaten over the head with "breast is best."  Honest to god, is there anyone in the US who doesn't know this?
