Mom Gets Fifteen Years For Unnecessary Surgeries on Son

Posted by Kelly Mills

williamsonFrom the department of "Eeeeesh!" comes this story: Two of Laurie Williamson's children were in wheelchairs and had feeding tubes. Her three kids altogether had at least 500 doctor's appointments in ten years in connection with a rare illness. And Williamson raised $150,000 between 2000 and 2005 from individuals and organizations for her kids' health issues.

One problem with this scenario: Prosecutors say she fabricated the illnesses to get the money. And she was convicted of child abuse and sentenced to 15 years for putting her son through two unnecessary surguries, for a nerve-stimulation device and a gastric feeding-button. The children were malnourished when they were taken into protective custody. She also told the kids they had a rare condition and would not survive past their teens. However, it's more likely she herself has a somewhat rare condition: Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where a person makes up or induces symptoms in another to get attention. And in this case, $150,000.

The kids are now with a relative, and their mom is not allowed contact.

7 years until someone notices?  She is not mentally ill.  She is a sociopath who saw dollar signs.  There was a guy in my area who did something similar recently.  He poisoned his toddlers, three times! He put Prozac and crap in their Campbells soup hoping to sue Campbells for millions.  Naturally tests were done and it was determined quickly that he did it.  But then he got them back and he freaking did it again!  The little girl was only 18 months old and will never fully recover.  She has a permanent seizure disorder and nerve damage.  The littel boy was 2 and he is doing better. Greed is evil.

Who are the doctors who did these surgeries? It's usually not up to parents to prescribe surgery.

I'm wondering exactly what Treespeed is asking.  How did she get the doctors to do it?  Certainly they have some responsibility too?

I tried to go to the Houston Chronicle website to ask them to finish the story and interview the surgeons, but registering and all that crap is taking too long. There's a lot more to the story that we want to know - how do the doctors believe her. HIPP is a good idea in principle, protecting us from too much information getting out that could damage our ability to get jobs/insurance, but it also binds the hands of providers that can't track who diagnosed these ailments - if she ran into one doctor who didn't believe her, all she had to do was take them to another doctor. Sorry - I'm not a policy wonk and I don't deal with health care a lot, but the fact that records don't follow me easily has always bothered me.
