Homeschooled Howler Monkeys

Posted by Adrienne Martini

I'll be the first to admit that I have the smallest crush on writer John Scalzi's brain. His fiction is great fun. His characters are well drawn and the action is non-stop. But it's his non-fiction -- which mostly comes in the form of blog posts lately -- that really makes me swoon. A post of his from this week just makes my knees all wobbly.

Here's Scalzi's take on homeschool. Regardless of whether you agree with him or not, you have to admit that his analysis is just a fun read, especially when you get to the part about spelling bees. I actually choked on my coffee when I got there. Scalzi never fails to bring the funny.

As for his many points about the homeschool, he crystallized a number of ideas that had been floating around in my brain. Judging by the comments -- quite a few of which are of the "I was homeschooled or I homeschool and I'm OK" sort --  he also made himself a lovely lighting rod for the homeschool issue.

I suspect he revels in raising reader ire, which is one more reason that I'm a little sweet on the man.
