Honey, We Need to Shrink the Kids

Posted by Jen Chaney

Social workers in the UK have sparked controversy by threatening to take away a couple's six children if three of the kids don't lose some weight by June. The heaviest sibling is a 12-year-old boy who weighs 16 stone, otherwise known to us non-Brits as around 224 pounds.

There is no denying that some of the children, whose names have not been released, could stand to shed some inches. But putting the entire brood in foster care seems beyond alarmist, which also makes me wonder if the Daily Mall might be exaggerating the situation a bit. Assuming this story represents the whole truth and nothing but, the move is indeed, as one member of Parliament describes it, "draconian."

The question is, how long until something like this happens in America?

Childhood obesity is an even more serious issue here than it is in Great Britain. And with places like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and my hometown, Montgomery County, Md., all banning transfats in restaurants, it's not hard to imagine a scenario where parents who don't impose stricter diets could be seen as negligent.

I'm all for raising healthy boys and girls, ones with low BMIs, proper eating habits and regular exercise routines. But separating kids from their parents rather than helping those children reach their fitness goals is heartless and counterproductive.

Besides, the mother of these children says she doesn't "even own a deep-fat fryer." Shouldn't she get (low-fat, sugar-free) brownie points for that?

You know, the #1 determinant of weight is genetics.  Most people - 95% - who lose weight, regain it all (and usually plus some) in five years.  And, making kids self-conscious about their weight is most likely to lead to what? Let's see - yo yo dieting (which wrecks the metabolism, making it even harder to lose weight each successive time), poor nutrition during those essential growing years, and horrible self-image (depression and eating disorders anyone?).

Yes, encourage your kids to be more active.  But how sad is it that children today must have "fitness goals"?  And, how sad is it that being fat can get you torn away from your family, causing trauma and sadness that will never go away - for something you may not even be able to change?

What is the #1 determinant of weight? Not activity level. Not even eating habits. Genetics. Yup. Guess these people shouldn't have reproduced in the first place, huh? Next time, instead of taking their children away from them, let's just impose forced sterilization on heavy people!

This all makes me sick to my stomach.  Think about what it would feel like to lose your child because he or she wasn't tall enough, fast enough, or the right skin color? That's about on par (because, the methods you can use to change your speed, height, and appearance are about as conducive to healthy self-image, and about as lasting as the methods you can use to lose weight).

If we did not pump our cattle with homrmones that make them fatter at a younger age (it speeds up puberty)then fed it to children there would be no obesity epidemic.  Look at labels.  Everything has whey, lactase, milk, cream, dehydrated skim milk, etc....  They all contain this hormone if it is not indicated to be free of it.  Soups contain it.  Waffles, frozen yogurt, hot dogs, chicken nuggest. They all have the hormone in them.  Sitting on your butt does not make you obese.  Eating too much and hormones do. Our government is trying to blame US for our kids being fat.  We let them watch too much TV they say.  I sat on my butt and read a lot as a kid and was underweight.  All of the kids in my school were skinny or normal in the 60's and 70's.  Then the 80's came and the Dairy, Beef, and meat industries started adding hormones to the animals feed to get them to mature faster so they could "harvest" them quicker. Why spend the money on feed for 2 years when you can accelerate the process of growth and weight gain in half that time?  It is making them money and killing people.  This is why girls are maturing earlier, JUST LIKE THE COWS!  This is why so many baby boys are born with birth defects of the penis and urogenitial system.  The food industry has turned the developed world into a herd of fat cows. Please wake up people.  Dont make your kids feel bad if they are overweight.  Feed them nutritious meals without any hormones, get fresh air and a bit of exercise and lobby against this poison.  Walmart just announced they will no longer carry milk that has growth hormone in it.  What do they know that we are not being told?
