Greenhouse: Breastfeeding is Green

Posted by Amy Kuras

We've all heard again and again and yet again about all the reasons breastfeeding is good for babies.  But it's good for the environment as well.

Cows, which make the milk that's used to make formula, are great big mooing polluters, is why. Plus there is the issue of all the formula cans or bottles – they aren’t always recyclable – as well as water used to wash a day's worth of bottles, and fossil fuels used to truck formula from factory to store.

All this to bring your attention to the fact a web store called NursingMotherSupplies.com is running a contest called "Nursing is Green." They are looking for the perfect slogan to fit on a t-shirt touting the environmentaly friendly nature of breastfeeding. The prize is a $300 breastfeeding gift basket.

I take issue with the fact they call formula "artificial baby milk" which I find a little judgy. They do sell a nice selection of products at decent prices, which I like since it can be hard know where to look to find useful products, and hey, you could win free swag.

None of these will fit on a t-shirt, but as a nursing mother who's just survived the first month, let me add these tongue-in-cheek reasons breastfeeding is green:

•    Being tied to the couch with a cluster-feeding baby means you're not driving anywhere, so no carbon emissions.

•    Have no time to pee or shower? Saves water!

•    Falling asleep at 9 p.m. out of the sheer exhaustion of being the sole source of nutrition for a growing human being saves tons of electricity.

Got a better idea (and yeah, that's not a high bar to clear)? Get your submissions in to NursingMotherSupplies.com by April 30.

Why would you need $300 worth of stuff if you're breastfeeding? Unless it contains nursing bras and/or a top of the line pump, I'm betting that that basket is a waste of money - and probably full of stuff that polluted the atmosphere while being made.

Based on their "kits", I think that's exactly what it includes, bookmama.

The first month is so hard. There were times when I just broke down crying because the baby would cluster-feed for four hours straight in the evening. I even found blood in his stool when he was about three weeks old and freaked out until I realized that it was just because my nipples had been bleeding at his last feeding. But we just past the one year mark and thankfully it has gotten a lot easier. Breastfeeding is now easily the most relaxing and stress-free part of my day.

The site actually has some nice nursing bras and tanks. And god knows that, between milk leakage, spit up, and diaper blow-outs, a girl with a newborn needs a big selection.

I'm just curious, why does it offend you that they call formula "artificial baby food"? Isn't that what it is?

Sorry, I meant to type "artificial baby milk".

Er...well, it is artificial baby milk. Does "breast milk substitute" have a better ring to it? I don't find the term particularly judgy, both because it's accurate, and they are using it specifically to highlight the difference between "artificial" and "natural". I am definitely for families making the feeding choice that works best for them, but arguing with the correct terminology doesn't really get us anywhere, KWIM?

I never got the "no time to shower" thing.  Babies sleep a lot.  And it never hurt one to sit in a bouncy seat while Mom gets clean.

Why not just call it formula?  Or, since it's a store with BFing related products, why not just leave formula out of the discussion altogether?  Of course, I shouldn't be surprised that people on this site wouldn't understand that taking the time to call something that already has a name (which seems to me to use the "correct terminology") by another name with the word "artificial" in it might be seen as judgy.
