Old, Dorky, Great

Posted by Madeline Holler

Mr. Rogers is a dork and even my kids, on some level, get this. But I like him because of his dorkiness, and they like him in spite of it. So here's to another 40 years of his dorky goodness.

The series "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" premiered Feb. 19, 1968. It's 40th birthday is being feted around Pittsburgh and includes a re-assembled Neighborhood of Make Believe set at its home, WQED. A Mr. Rogers Sweater Drive has also been planned.

Fred Rogers would have turned 80 this year, something fans will also be celebrating. He died in 2003.

The Neighborhood of Make Believe was never my favorite. I liked Chef Brocket and that guy with the music store. My favorite now is watching those video tapes of how everyday things were made in what was once a very industrial Pittsburgh.

What do you think of Fred?

As a kid I never really liked the neighborhood, it was too weird to me.

As an adult I am thoroughly creeped out by his cardigan, smile  and odd drawl.  You know, in a "No way in hell am I letting you show my son your 'land of make believe,' Fred." kind of way.

I love him. It's easy to make fun of him, but I think he honestly loved entertaining and educating children, and they're still benefitting from it.

That said... the Neighborhood of Make-Believe seemed weird when I was a kid, and it creeps me out now. Lady Elaine Fairchild is possibly the creepiest puppet ever, and Daniel the tiger gets on my nerves.

But that doesn't stop us from watching it once in a while.

I adore Mister Rogers. Always have, always will. One of my first words was "Rogie"! I love his gentleness, his assurances, his sincerity, his fashion sense, his adventures, his security, his nuturing.

Full disclosure, my mom worked at WQED with Mister Rogers before I was born, so he was more real to me than, say, Captain Kangaroo. Who I also adored.
