Pediatrician Poll: Attachment Parenting

Posted by editors

"I'm not sure what that means. I would hope that all parenting is attached." — Patricia McGuire, MD, FAAP. Cedar Rapids, IA.

"I'm neutral. There is no one parenting strategy that works for everyone." — John W. Waidner, MD, FAAP. Jacksonville, FL.

"I'm neutral, except for sleeping in the same bed, though a co-sleeper is OK." — Robert D. Saken, MD, FAAP. NY, NY.

To obtain these results, Babble randomly called 300 AAP-approved pediatricians in 50 states, then tallied the answers of the 20 who called back. Pediatrician Poll appears in Strollerderby every Friday.

This is a survey of 20 pediatricians? 20? What the hell is the point of that? That's not a statistically significant number.

Also, AP has many dimensions.  I saw a segment on some extreme AP followers, who believed in co-sleeping and breastfeeding INDEFINITELY, and refused to use diapers of any kind.  Few people are that extreme, but many people follow at least some of the tenets of AP (baby-wearing or co-sleeping, for example).  So, it's hard to ask people to be either for or against a multi-dimensional concept such as attachment parenting.

I was going to say something similar to Shannon.

Saying you are AP is a bit like saying you are a feminist. There are all kinds of shades of AP: some parents are hardcore babywearers but don't co-sleep, some parents do child led breastfeeding but don't cloth diaper, some parents practice loving child centered discipline but babywear, some formula feeding mothers feed on demand... just like some feminists are liberal or radical or queer or third wave or marxist...

And, I've found very few pediatricians who know much about anything except pediatric clinical health issues. Babywearing, co-sleeping, child-led weaning... are not exactly medical issues.
