Then Things Got Weird

Posted by Adrienne Martini

A good friend of mine is married to a guy from Sweden. After a few rounds of aquavit, we got to talking about TV shows we watched as kids. Sid and Marty Krofft came up, of course, as did Alphabet Soup and Romper Room. Then Ola, the Swede, mentioned something about a show with a big pancake.

"A big pancake?" one of us asked, assuming that something had gotten lost in translation.

"Yes," Ola said, "a big pancake. It would come alive and become a magical world with creatures that crawled around on it. There was also a sick little boy whose blanket was the pancake. And a magician."

Which just goes to show you. TV for kids is always trippier than adults can imagine.  As evidence, I merely point to Yo Gabba, Gabba, Boobah and all of these shows that the Times (U.K.) rounded up from around the world.

yo gabba gabba freaks. me. out.  There was a while where my 2 year old was singing and dancing "The Puppet Master" song all the time and I could barely contain my horror.

My daughter is only 15 months old and not watching television yet.... so I don't know anything about yo gabba gabba... but today I watched a fascinating and frightening clip on the Mates of State blog from a show called Big Comfy Couch. Are they serious?

My daughter received a DVD of the first season of Sesame Street-- apparently it's a little raw compared to kids' shows now... my husband and I are psyched to watch it.

I remember seeing Barbarapapa (sp?) in my youth in cosmopolitan Pittsburgh in the 70s... And then spending many years trying to convince people that I wasn't just making it up.

xine:  My husband used to watch Barbapapa as a kid, too.  A few years ago, we were shopping in a stationery story in Tokyo, and he found a set of Barbapapa stickers.  He was over the moon!  www.barbapapa.fr might bring back some memories for you :)
