Hospital Staff Too Busy To Deliver Baby

Posted by Amy S.F. Lutz

It's a common complaint:  the OB only comes in at the end of labor to catch the baby, so why does s/he get all the glory?

But what about if the OB can't even do that much?

Erica Moreno-Munoz was laboring Monday night at the Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, when she alerted a nurse that her baby was coming.  Although the nurse could see the baby crowning, she claimed she couldn't help Moreno-Munoz by herself, and scampered off to find a doctor.

Fortunately, Moreno-Munoz's sister, Janeth Moreno, was able to catch the baby, who arrived before the doctor was found.  Both mother and baby are doing fine.

I can't wait to hear how much the Medical Center bills Moreno-Munoz for delivering her own baby.

What an idiot nurse.  I deliver babies all the time when the doc can't get there.  It's not hard - mom does all the work!

That's why you don't have an OB, you have a midwife.  They'll stay right by your side the whole delivery and if for some reason (complication, something scary, epidural) you need the doc, they can get one.

When I was in labour with my first, the OB (who was not mine, he was on call) checked on me, said I was doing fine, and wandered off, probably to watch the double overtime playoff hockey game that was on that evening (yeah, only in Canada). Well, baby came MUCH earlier than expected. The nurse was in shock, and my hubby caught the baby.

The nurse at the birth of my son was getting nervous because my pushing was "too effective!" She actually asked me to stop pushing so the doctor could make it (supposedly they are not legally allowed to birth the babies themselves).... I attempted for a second and then said, "no fucking way!" as my doula said, "we can catch this baby, you just keep going...."
