Strollerderby Playdate: Dooce's Husband Speaks Up About Depression

If you'd like to understand clinical depression, especially post-partum related depression, read Dooce. If you want to laugh and cry and understand the ins and outs of parenting while mentally ill, you'll be glad you did.  Furthermore, if you want to understand what it's like to live with mental illness while untereated, read this.

But what of the spouses and partners of people who struggle with mental illness?  Turns out, Dooce's husband has an incredible riches of experience to share on this topic...

Late last month, on Blurbomat.com Dooce's usually non-blogging husband, Jon,  spoke up about what it's like to live with a partner who is clinically depressed or mentally ill.   He discusses the usual topics of self-care and the benefits of talk therapy, but with an obviously hard-won maturity that is truly impressive.

Living with clinical depression or another mental illness isn't easy, but one can imagine that being the partner of this person might in some cases be even more difficult, especially when children are involved.

Sound like he has to walk around on eggshells most of his life - I don't envy him that. Maybe someday we can learn that adult's are responsible for their behavior and that it is an issue of character - not something one can be talked or medicated into.

Just like those damn diabetics.  Buck up and regulate your own insulin levels already!  Lazy bastards.  Or those epileptics who twitch and spaz for attention?  Geez.  What severe character flaws man.  Talk about irresponsible....

I suffer from depression and my husband does too.  Jon's piece gave me a new appreciation for what my husband deals with, even though I'm familiar with being on both sides of this illness.  No matter what the illness, it's always nice to have someone who is able to stand by you and help you through it.  Love is about sacrifice and though it may be easier to be married to someone without this disease, I wouldn't change a thing.  And neither would my husband.
