I hate daycare. And winter. And my husband's place of employment, and lots of other things that I am typically in favor of, because I think they have contributed to the germfest that has turned my house into a near approximation of a TB ward over the last few weeks.
It started with my daughter, four weeks ago, waking up in the middle of the night with a barking cough that was so bad it sent me staggering to my files to make sure I'd vaccinated her for whooping cough (I had). Then my husband, then me, then her again, then me again, then him again.
It sucks, and because I am pregnant I can’t take anything, and because my daughter is under six she can’t either. My husband? He prefers complaining to actually doing anything about it refuses to in solidarity with us. With all the news lately about risk of overdose, ineffective medicines and so on I just don’t want to mess with giving my kid cold medicines. So I greeted this news of a study which was published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, with great joy. Apparently, just a teaspoon of honey works as well as cough medicine and better than no treatment at all.
Of course, the study was based on parent's reports instead of a controlled experiment, so who knows. But this falls under the "can’t hurt/might help" category, since the worst risk is a sugared-up kid.
(I don’t need to remind you that kids under one year old can’t have honey because of the risk of a form of botulism, right? Good).
