Webkinz Shortages? Oh Darn.

Posted by Karen Murphy

webkinzInstinctively I stay away from the more annoying toy trends. Cabbage Patch dolls? Bleah. Beanie babies? Puleeze. Webkinz? Not in this house, thank you.

And hey, I'm not the only one who feels this way: "Webkinz are the most annoying trend since Beanie Babies, which were the most annoying trend since Cabbage Patch Kids. They also are among the most cleverly marketed products ever."

I can't argue with any of that. Especially the last bit, which is apparently why the things are in short supply.

A few months ago I saw a display of Webkinz at a home and garden store, of all places. The display was empty. At the time I chalked it up to the fact that it was a home and garden store and not a toy store, but apparently the annoying little creatures have a life of their own (which is I guess the point).

So have you and your kids jumped on this trend? Do you think they teach kids lessons of responsibility or are they basically crack for kids and a colossal waste of time? And what do you think of hot toy trends in general?

I think parents getting overly annoyed with something and not allowing their kids to have it just because it's so popular is actually annoying.

I also see the merit of making your kids wait to get things.. but hey, if it's the popular thing, you can get it and it's Christmas, then what the hell.. just get it.. it'll make them happy.

I don't know much about them, but my 10 year old nephew has some. From what I've gleamed, he has "bought" his friend a gift, and paid for the wrap as well, from some kind of webkinz store.  So at the very least they have taught him that you can't just "get" whatever you want, you have to earn it.

Webkinz are like annoying TV such as Dora or Elmo.. it gives me 15 minutes to think while my 6 year old "buys" and earns KinzCash (now THAT is an annoying term!) Around here phrases like "the website isn't working" and "mommy needs the computer now" keeps my son from playing for hours. Sadly, the little games are addictive to adults as well.
