Selfish Breeders Doom the Planet

If you're a parent, you're selfish. And you're dooming the planet. So says Toni "I'm better than you" Vernelli, a British woman who aborted her pregnancy and later had herself sterilized all for the love of Mother Gaia.

"Having children is selfish. It's all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet," says Toni, 35. "Every person who is born uses more food, more water, more land, more fossil fuels, more trees and produces more rubbish, more pollution, more greenhouse gases, and adds to the problem of over-population."

Also, "I think dolphins will inherit the world and form a master colony in the land of chimpanzees."

OK, fine, I made the last part up. Because really, what else can you say? Other than I think this particular person made a very sound decision.

Well, she's right.

More people just consume more stuff and people aren't terribly bright about ensuring the suitability of the planet for their progeny. Of course that's the irony - making more babies to satisfy your evolutionary drive for immortality pretty much wrecks it for the people you make.  That being said, I don't feel too ashamed about "selling out" and creating a family; family is a question of personal security, and I'm totally cool with being an animal.  Meh.

I used to know a guy with the same philosphy.  He was a diagnosed narcissitic addicted to sex.  Freak-a-zoid!  Truth be told she just did not want to have that baby.  Had a psychotic breakdown after her abortion, had to have a hysterectomy and decided it was for the good of the planet after all.  Bravo.

But whose to say that the kids we have today aren't going to make some pretty amazing discoveries that may actually change the world?

She sounds overly simplistic, and pessimistic to me.

That gene pool has been appropriately chlorinated and Darwin has spoken and all that sort of thing. 'Good!' I say. More for the rest of us then.
