You Aren't Getting Snuggled Thanks To Political Correctness?

Posted by Kelly Mills

scary huggy tchotchkeSome British psychologists say we all need hugs, like at least one a day. However, "Political correctness is partly to blame as we have been conditioned not to touch anyone anymore as it can easily be deemed inappropriate." M'kay. Even if you don't feel the yearning for some snuggle action, the researchers say that while our kids are getting all the love, the adults are cold and lonely. Hugging for kids drops off at around age 11, and then picks up at age 18, I guess when they start going to college parties, though we didn't call that hugging when I was younger. Ahem.

Look, I'm not anti-hug at all, but is it really being P.C. that has destroyed our cuddles? When I think of the folks who might want to hug me but worry it could be inappropriate, I think, "thank god that person isn't hugging me." And maybe some of the adolescent hug drop off has more to do with the nature of teens. The study says, "Those aged between the ages of 15 and 17 are the ones least likely to receive, or even want to receive, a hug." I bet.

Because this study was sponsored by a soap company, the spokesperson also says, "Our study found having huggable, snuggleable soft skin makes us feel happier when coming into contact with loved ones." What a crucial finding. But whatever, go hug yerself.

There probably aren't so many mamas on this site that have teenagers..... so I feel qualified to hop in on this since I've been parenting teenagers for decades [due to adopting after my first family was grown and also raising a couple of grandkids in their teens]. I'll only comment on what I "saw" not what I "think".  Last week I went to two events at my son's school.  My son is 17 years old and active in theater so this is a theater crowd.  The kids came in one or two at a time and hugged everybody...girls and boys alike.  Thay all looked like they loved it.  No inappropriate touching here!!!!! Swift warm hugs and sweet comments to one another.  Their warmth was so lovely to see that I commented on it to my 19 year old grandson who accompanied me but doesn't attend school there.  He said "yeah, they are such good friends...it's nice." These kids are all between 14/15 and 18/19 years old.
