Strollerderby Playdate: Blogging Pink

A few months ago, I looked around my church and gasped out loud to realize how many women sitting around me were in the middle of the the fight of their lives and how many women around me have survived that same fight against cancer growing in their breasts, colons, ovaries and in other corners of their otherwise healthy bodies. I am humbled by the strength I see in these women, the ability to keep on with their lives and children and work. During October, as we honor all those people who had, have or will be diagnosed with breast cancer, I think it is also the right time to lift up the bloggers who are courageously posting their experiences with grace, humor, honesty and awareness. Here's to you, beautiful women with bright, shining light:

Toddler Planet's WhyMommy has a team built up around her to stand with her during breast cancer treatment. Her writing will call you to do the same. Be sure to read what WhyMommy has to say about pink stuff as pom pons for this month.

J's Daughter began by writing about the ovarian cancer that took her mother's life and now writes about saving her own life and others. This will stop you in your tracks.

Cancer Bitch is fierce. You may get that impression by the photos in the sidebar.

The Merits of the Case is LawMom's documented journey through cancer, law school and mothering. You can help her win a scholarship to navigate all that by reading this post.

The Cancer Grrrl keeps it real while keeping it (like I like it) with the grrr in grrrl.

A Woman of Many Parts is a mother from London who writes poignantly about secondary cancer, being scared and moments of sweet forgetting.

Limbodacious is funny and smart and wants you to do what she says. She's not kidding. Seriously, do it.

Do you know someone who is blogging their journey through cancer? Share a link to their blog in the comments so we can give them some love, too.

Oh, won't you please, please, please send so love and support to my friend Scarlett who continues to battles cancer at St. Jude's.

Scarlett (only 20 years old) recently had a new set of "assets" implanted after making a difficult decision.

An excerpt from one of her posts:

" You have about an 85% chance of developing breast cancer," the doctor told me. I told him to fix it. Because a 15% chance of not developing it is pretty slim. Because the leading cause of death in women 18-24 is breast cancer even though no one seems to realize that it affects young people. I'm only 20 and don't want to be another statistic who died from breast cancer. Because I already have enough damn cancer and my body isn't up to hosting a new one.

So I got the surgery. I got a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction because I had to. And yeah I miss my boobs and it hurts like hell but it sure beats getting breast cancer. Because that would kill me a lot faster than my leukemia ever will. It totally sucks but life sucks and I'll get over it. Plus my new boobs are much hotter than the old ones ever were and I'm from LA so of course I'll fit in. Half my class got implants for their graduation present.. I'm just a few years late.

Breast cancer in young women isn't talked about enough. Because it's scary and no one wants to think about that happening. Being young is about going to college and parties and finding out who you are. Breast cancer isn't supposed to be a part of that plan. But it is. I don't regret getting the surgery because it may have saved my life. And maybe that sounds dumb considering my leukemia has no long term survivors. Maybe my leukemia will become active again tomorrow but at least I don't have to worry about breast cancer. And for me that makes it worth it.
