Hot for Teacher: Cheering Coach Suspended Over Video

Posted by Karen Murphy

hot teacherWhen and how does a teacher cross the line from being a role model to (inappropriately) being one of the guys (or girls)? That's the question that was apparently explored, albeit briefly, when a Gilbert Arizona high school English teacher and cheer coach was suspended after a student made and distributed a video showing her demonstrate a new cheer routine to her class (video posted after the jump).

While the overt sexuality in portions of the video bothers me somewhat (our high school kids are cheering like this? when did that happen?), if it's what is commonly being practiced and performed by the kids there's absolutely nothing wrong in what's in this video and nothing wrong in the teacher demonstrating to the class (if it was relevant to the discussion, or was shown to the cheering squad, etc.  Those details are unclear). Or is it weird seeing a teacher be kind of sexy?

While the cheer demonstration might have been irrelevant and even inappropriate during a discussion of, say The Grapes of Wrath, I hardly think that a suspension was the appropriate disciplinary action.

(And what about the student who recorded it on a cell phone?)

But have a look at the video and tell me what you think:

That happend in my neck of the woods.  I have seen it and even though I have thought cheerleaders were too sexy for a long time, she did just what the kids do.  It was not appropriate for a teacher to do that in her regular class though.  She used poor decision making skills on that one.  However, suspended?  I don't think she should have been.  It wasn't that sexy.

You're kidding me, Right?  Kick a teacher out for this?  And a  cheer leading coach to boot?

Funny how the girls who are students can do this but the teacher can't?  And one who teaches the kids to do the routine?

Granted, the teacher is a bit old to be doing this but come on people, loosen up.

Bet if there hadn't been a video nothing would have happened...

This kinda reminds me when I was in High School way back when.  We had a teacher who was an Alice Cooper fan.  For Halloween she came with Alice Cooper makeup and hat.  My feeling was that when I got to be an adult I'd be an adult and not someone trying to recapture their glory days in high school.

One a lighter note, I wonder just how many of the student's fathers go to strip clubs and how many of the mothers go off to La Bare?....

I didn't see anything wrong with that video. It certainly didn't deserve a suspension

What a load of crap. Commercials that are aired during kids "shows" have more "sex" in them than that video did. I hope that teacher takes the goddamned school board to pieces for this.

Sigh.

Dumb idea to suspend her.  What kind of uptight conservative is running that school?  Sure it might not have been the best use of time, but I recall being intrigued, delighted and refreshed whenever a teacher let us in on a not-relevant-to-the-class type of talent.  Made them seem more human and, frankly, made me connect better with them.  Like the Latin teacher who was in a nomadic hippie band - he brought his guitar in Sr. year and spent at least 15 minutes NOT teaching Latin!

What kind of perverts at that school decided it is okay for underage girls (jailbait) to do the same moves but obscene for a woman to do it.  It is for the same audience and the coach is wearing much more clothing than those cheerleaders do.  What they are really saying is it is okay for teens to act promiscuous of obscene for someone of consenting age to behave the same way.

I didn't even see anything sexy, there. Just a few hip swirls - it wasn't like she grinding and spanking her ass or anything. Wha'?

the area this happened in is super-mormon, therefore, super-conservative. it's ridiculous to suspend her. chances are one or two of the right squeeky wheels are responsible for her suspension.

Dumb, da dumb dumb... When I was in high school, younger girls were doing way sexier moves in far skimpier outfits. I didn't even see anything very provocative in there- or was it just inappropriate because she's a grown up? Shocking that the CHEERLEADING COACH would demonstrate actual cheerleading moves... And yeah, my classes spent hours trying to get teachers off topic in class. Good times.

Yeah, OK so she shouldn't have done this, but in reality she's just doing what regular cheerleaders do. Why are people so surprised?

I would put my energy into stopping underage girls from doing those moves instead of pestering a grown woman.

This is totally STUPID!!!  I have seen cheerleaders and cheer coaches do alot more provocative moves than that and to more risque songs than Hey Mickey.  Our kids see more than that on television everyday.  Come on people, it's a cheer not step by step instructions on how to have sex!!!

K, yes, actually I did see Bring it On, or enough of it, anyway.  But...that's a movie, not real life.  And last time I went to a high school football game (about 6 years ago) I didn't see anything as overtly sexual as in the movie (which was pretty tame).  Maybe I live in the wrong part of the country?

I didn't think there was anything wrong with her dance either, and I don't think she should have been suspended for it.

I do have a problem with the bias against conservatives in the comments. I guess conservatives are uptight. And what, liberals are loose? Come on, you loose liberals, get over yourselves.

I just watched the video and was waiting for something shockingly provocative...I'm still waiting...some of the moves are slightly suggestive, but like many of the other comments posted, look at prime time tv, commercials, the hallways in your local high school and the cheer routines that high school girls are doing(and with far less clothes on!). It was spirit week at the high school, the teacher was trying to relate and connect to her students...What was wrong with what she did. As a teacher it angers me that every move we make may be recorded or taped and scrutinized as though we were trying to intentionally harm or corrupt the students. As a student I would have loved a teacher that was able to "let loose" and show that they were human- as BBBGMOM said about her latin teacher. Just a hint- the students will connect better with you when you do show that you are human...don't punish the teachers that are reaching out to the students...it was only a cheer. If she was suspended for doing the cheer, then the cheerleaders shoudn't be doing the cheer.  Is there anyone (besides the board) that feels she should have been suspended?

I've seen a couple of these articles now, so I guess this is qualifying as a wee overseas trend: pole dancing lessons as physical fitness for teens and pre-teens . Those who are pro say it offers a fun activity that emphasizes flexibility, strength
