When and how does a teacher cross the line from being a role model to (inappropriately) being one of the guys (or girls)? That's the question that was apparently explored, albeit briefly, when a Gilbert Arizona high school English teacher and cheer coach was suspended after a student made and distributed a video showing her demonstrate a new cheer routine to her class (video posted after the jump).
While the overt sexuality in portions of the video bothers me somewhat (our high school kids are cheering like this? when did that happen?), if it's what is commonly being practiced and performed by the kids there's absolutely nothing wrong in what's in this video and nothing wrong in the teacher demonstrating to the class (if it was relevant to the discussion, or was shown to the cheering squad, etc. Those details are unclear). Or is it weird seeing a teacher be kind of sexy?
While the cheer demonstration might have been irrelevant and even inappropriate during a discussion of, say The Grapes of Wrath, I hardly think that a suspension was the appropriate disciplinary action.
(And what about the student who recorded it on a cell phone?)
But have a look at the video and tell me what you think:
