In an aggressive attempt to control her grown daughter's life, a 51-year-old Brazilian woman got pregnant with and gave birth to her own grandchildren.
Actually, I think she and her daughter arranged the deal. And it would seem things have worked out as planned. They all look pretty happy.
The mom/grandma agreed to be a surrogate for the daughter/mom, after the 27-year-old daughter/mom tried unsuccessfully for four years to get and stay pregnant. After other methods for achieving pregnancy and carrying full term failed, daughter/mom looked for another woman to carry her transferred embryos.
In Brazil, though, surrogacy laws only allow close relatives to serve as baby-makers. The desperate daughter/mom is an only child, and none of her cousins stepped up. The only legal option was for mom/grandma to lend a helping uterus. Now, they have twin grandsons/sons. Way to go mom/moms!
The baby boys were delivered via c-section a couple of weeks before grandma's due date, since she was having trouble sleeping (happens to the elderly, I hear). Now she can return home to her knitting and bridge club and let someone else wake frequently in the middle of the night (though something tells me she'll want to do a lot of babysitting).
I know I’m supposed to think this is disgusting, but I actually think it’s just fine. Better than fine, even. I think it’s pretty fucking great (or pretty inseminating great, or whatever). Women are getting pregnant and giving birth at different ages, through different means and for many different reasons. Getting grandma knocked up is just different. But is that so bad?
I do wonder, though, if the 51-year-old post-partum grandmother regrets saying, "if there's anything I can do, honey ..."
I tell you, we mothers just give and give.
