Woman Gives Birth to Her Own Grandkids

Posted by Madeline Holler

In an aggressive attempt to control her grown daughter's life, a 51-year-old Brazilian woman got pregnant with and gave birth to her own grandchildren.

Actually, I think she and her daughter arranged the deal. And it would seem things have worked out as planned. They all look pretty happy.

The mom/grandma agreed to be a surrogate for the daughter/mom, after the 27-year-old daughter/mom tried unsuccessfully for four years to get and stay pregnant. After other methods for achieving pregnancy and carrying full term failed, daughter/mom looked for another woman to carry her transferred embryos.

In Brazil, though, surrogacy laws only allow close relatives to serve as baby-makers. The desperate daughter/mom is an only child, and none of her cousins stepped up. The only legal option was for mom/grandma to lend a helping uterus. Now, they have twin grandsons/sons. Way to go mom/moms!

The baby boys were delivered via c-section a couple of weeks before grandma's due date, since she was having trouble sleeping (happens to the elderly, I hear). Now she can return home to her knitting and bridge club and let someone else wake frequently in the middle of the night (though something tells me she'll want to do a lot of babysitting).

I know I’m supposed to think this is disgusting, but I actually think it’s just fine. Better than fine, even. I think it’s pretty fucking great (or pretty inseminating great, or whatever). Women are getting pregnant and giving birth at different ages, through different means and for many different reasons. Getting grandma knocked up is just different. But is that so bad?

I do wonder, though, if the 51-year-old post-partum grandmother regrets saying, "if there's anything I can do, honey ..."

I tell you, we mothers just give and give.

That's weird. Not the part of an older woman giving birth part, only that she carried her grandkids.

If it were me, I would have adopted. There are plenty of needy kids in Brazil looking for good homes.

I think it's kinda nice. I mean, if I was going to go the surrogacy route, I'd rather have my mom than a stranger, no question about it.

I don't think it's weird at all, and I don't understand why we're "supposed" to think it's gross.  It's not like Grandma and Son-in-Law were knockin' boots trying to make these babies.  If they were, then EWW, but I'm thinking they did this all scientific-like.

I do agree that adoption should be a more attractive choice, but it's not and that's really unfortunate.  If I ever lose my mind completely and decide we need another kid, I am adopting one.

If a woman that old (or older) has her OWN babies, people freak out and accuse her of being selfish.  If she does it for her adult daughter, people applaud her for her selflessness.  Yeah, I know she's not keeping the babies, but she still put her body through pregnancy at 51.  Interesting...

Sometimes parenting and writing about parenting can be an overly serious grim business... what with the worry and the fretting and the studies. Then, along comes a story about a teacher named Budge and all of a sudden, you laugh and forget all about the

A British newspaper reports that the women who became the country’s oldest to give birth struggled to hold her now 18-month-old son. See! At 63, she’s too old to properly raise and care for a young child. She’s struggling under his weight! Oh. Like other
