Russian OB to Mom: That Damn Big Baby!

Posted by Madeline Holler

A Siberian woman gave birth today to a live baby water buffalo.

Actually, she had a baby girl – her 12th child – who weighed almost 8 kilograms (metric conversions after the jump. Suffice it to say, that child was huge!).

The parents are stunned. Stunned. As is anyone reading this report who has ever had a full-term fetus rubbing against their spines and kicking at their livers.

Big baby Nadia joins her eights sisters and three brothers, all of whom weighed at least 11 pounds at birth, but nothing like their youngest sibling who broke the scales at 17.1 pounds.

Nadia was delivered via c-section. Ladies, you can uncross your legs. But look out for geysers when mom’s milk comes in.

Mom says she didn’t eat anything special – noodles, potatoes, tomatoes. What, by the bushel? Deep fried with cheese?

I wonder if this woman has the mom gene? She’s definitely doing her part – if a bit extravagantly – to reverse the population decline in her part of the world.

Actually, it seems moms who eat well, lots of protein etc and healthy have bigger babies. Moms who are downing the McDonalds and loads of fat have the five pounders.

Of course, this woman is just a big exception since she routinely has SUCH large babies.

I love that the normal-sized baby next to Nadia is looking at her like, "Holy hell?"

Yes, the "normal" baby's expression is awesome!

probably undiagnosed gestational diabetes.  GD causes extra large baby torsos.  The 17 pounder down in South America last year was also a GD baby.

Is that actually the baby in that pic? Look at all that chub! She is big proportionally, but she's got enough extra to carry her a week without eating. Lordy. Mom could use the time to regain her strength for the upcoming battle.

Good LORD!  Even via c-section, that poor woman must have been crazy-uncomfortable.  I wonder how they'll bend the "don't lift anything heavier than your baby" rule for her?  That's the size of 2 babies!

A mom delivered a twelve-pounder on the same day I delivered my eight-pound son. Seeing them in isolettes next to each other, I remember thinking, "That kid is going to eat my baby!" Ah, morphine.

I second the GD diagnosis (like what?  I'm a dr or something?)  Look at her diet -- mostly carbs -- and if you have GD, they'd be heading down the umbulicus superhighway faster than all get out.

I wonder if she was verrrry sleepy after her meals.  But then, with that many kids are you ever really awake?

That's digusting...how much does the mother weigh? Babies should not be fat, it means their diet (controlled by the parent[s]) is poor or unbalanced....that kid is going to have to deal with being fat right from the start...grow up fat, be a fat adult...sad...

OMG!  That baby is as big as my first at 6 months.  I looked it up!  She is heavier that a bag of potatoes!  All I can think of is OUCH!  That pregnancy must have hurt.  How big is mom and dad?  Are they exceptionally large people?  I don't mean just fat, I mean LARGE.  I have a friend who is over 6 feet and her husband is over 6'5".  Their daughter had hands the size of my 5 year old when she was born.

Can you imagine carrying that baby around?  Ugh...  Hope the mom is like a weight-lifter.
