Breastfeeding Sucks in Canada Too!

Posted by Madeline Holler

O Canada. I'm confused.

I thought everything was better up there, up north, Canada. What with your clean air and your bacon and your quaint, cooing vowels. You've got all the good bands, all the funny comedians, all those adorably feisty French-speaking separatists.

And Canada, don’t make me bring up healthcare – the envy of North America. Free surgeries! Free consultations! Practically free cholesterol drugs! Can I be you, Canada?

Then I read this, my understandably smug northern neighbor, and I am stunned. Canada, I no idea that you hate breastfeeders too!

Hate, I don’t mean hate (do I?). Fear, loathe, barely tolerate, misunderstand? I don’t know. But you’re sounding an awful lot like the sad lot of us parents down here in the blushing, close-minded, breasts-are-for-waitresses U.S.

See, someone at one of your YMCAs asked a mom to stop nursing poolside. An Edmonton Facebook member lost her account after posting pics of herself breastfeeding. Another mom felt like crap for choosing formula over breastmilk for her child. Worst of all, a Canadian university researcher on mothering says “it takes courage to breastfeed … it can make you quite vulnerable.” In Canada! Women need courage to breastfeed in Canada? That’s so American!

The article touches on other modern mom issues and, let me tell you, I thought I was reading the local paper. Lack of support for your choices. Pressure to go back to work but no help with daycare. Cloth vs. disposable. Attachment vs. cry-it-out. Canada, quit copying!

Listen, I know we in the U.S. push our bad TV and endless wars on you, Canada. But do yourself a favor. Leave the prudishness, the body discomfort, the love-the-breast-hate-the-function contradictions to us. That’s something we Americans do best.

Hi, Canadian Mom of two boys here.

Scrutiny happens everywhere.  But may I be the first to point out that Facebook is run by Americans?

Canada certainly has it's good points on all those issues you described, and I'm happy to be a Canadian, but damned if you're going to try and call the kettle black on this, pot.  Especially when said kettle is shiny stainless steel.  Okay, maybe not stainless, but certainly pretty buff.

All countries need to step it up on parenthood - and lamely pointing out Canada's flaws when your own glass house is crumbling is counterproductive and only self-serving in alleviating some of your guilt, if only for the time it would take for me to whip out a tit at the mall.

I breastfed both kids and not once did anyone bat an eyelash.  Sure, there are asshats here who would dare approach a breastfeeding mother and shuffle her along, but Canadians, for the most part, have a good history of knowing when to keep their mouths shut.  Just sayin'.

Karen Rani, I believe you missed the point of the post.  It seemed to me that the flaws pointed out were American, with a caveat to the lovely citizens of Canada to keep on being a lot more free and easy and openminded.  Because, while America exports a lot of crap, the American attitude toward breastfeeding and parenting in general are things we maybe ought to just keep to ourselves.

Canada is an awesome place to live and raise children.  I think it should also be mentioned that women get one year paid maternity leave...

Hold up, all. Kare's reaction is not that out of the ordinary. I speak to the statement" Understandbly smug" Hang on. Canadian moms aren't smug about how good things are in Canada. We still get nailed on our taxes, we aren't taxed as a household but rather as individuals( unlike some American states, where you come out ahead for being married and a family), we only get a fraction of our salary on our year off, and it's bloodly nigh impossible to find decent daycare- it's 90 bucks a day at a really good in Toronto and that's after a YEAR on the waiting list. So yes, while we have gov't that's a little more family friendly than the US, we still have a ways to go to come close to say, France or Sweden or Denmark. While we do have laws to protect our breastfeeding and pregnancy rights in each province, there are still people who make things uncomfortable. If a non-white person wanted to eat at Taco Bell and was told they made the other customers upset, there IS a law against that in all the provinces. But I bet after a couple times, that person wouldn't want to eat at Taco Bell or anywhere else. As long as NORTH AMERICAN society sexualizes breasts and nursing, we will all struggle with this issue.

And please, do not call Canadians smug. We might be, but hey, no need to call attention to it. We don't want people thinking we're not polite...:)

America..Land of the brave, home of the free, as long as you are not talking about a baby sucking on a boob.

If Canadians didn't talk so funny I'd move there in a heartbeat ;)
