Sancti-Nursers Are BACK!

Posted by Karen Murphy

inflatable breastsDespite a minor setback from the previously-touted link between breastfeeding and asthma, it's my extreme and unctuous pleasure to report that breastfeeding still trumps everything else because breastfeeding saves lives, dammit! Yep, the worldwide child mortality rate is the lowest, like, ever, according to UNICEF, and the world has breastfeeding mothers to thank, in large part.

So you all, and you know who you are, can pat yourselves on the back (with your free hand, of course), and say Job Well Done. Oh, and other basic health interventions also can take a bow, like measles immunizations, Vitamin A supplements, and treated bed nets (yes! kids are still dying from measles and malaria!).

So, while I think 9.7 million global child deaths is way too many for a year or any period of time at all, it's way down from what it was.

And billions of kids have breasts to thank for that. So you can go right ahead and get all sanctimonious about the part breasts play in perpetuating the species.

And the next time you're squeezing your girls, lactating or non-lactating, into two sports bras, give yourself a proud moment in front of the mirror and say to yourself:

"Tits save lives.

Hmm... isn't breastfeeding at an all time low?

And world rates have improved also and are rising:

The US statistics count moms who only tried nursing once, for a day, as breast feeders for their statistics. Now, I'm thinking if they're just nursing that one day they're probably too busy with a day old baby to be looking down on you. If I recall, barely any moms are breastfeeding after a few months, the more likely candidates for your ire (since they've learned to latch the baby on and strut about, boobies to the wind, sneering down their noses at you at the same time). Can we just get a form post you all can put up every few days that says "Babble hates breastfeeding moms?" Anybody got any suggestions on a website that's more middle of the road? I don't fit in at mothering.com for sure, and the AP/breastfeeding hatred here is out of control. I'd be happy to leave you all to it if someone could tell me where a moderate mama can go?

McGlory, You're right about the U.S. statistics, and I riffed on those a few weeks ago.

Um...not sure where you get from this post about hating bfing/AP moms.  Being one myself.  The point of this post was to celebrate breastfeeding as a part of what's keeping kids alive around the world.

But what I think we present here at Strollerderby is balance between the two viewpoints. I actually find quite a bit of moderation here (in the blogging anyway), and support for all choices.

I don't think it's the content so much as the title. Why does every mom who breastfeeds and supports breastfeeding have to be labeled a "sancti-nurser" or a "breastfeeding nazi"? I guess I missed the celebration in with the snarky title, and the general antipathy lately, in the comments and the posts, against AP parenting/breast feeding/etc.
