Breaking Broken Toy News: Recall Gets Bigger

Posted by Kelly Mills
polly pocket badOkay, soon our children are gonna have nothing left to play with except sharp rocks and thumbtacks, both of which are apparently safer than most of what you buy at the local toystore. Mattel is recalling yet more toys made in China, and this time the recall includes "7.3 million play sets, including Polly Pocket dolls and Batman action figures, and 253,000 die cast cars that contain lead paint." Hear my cry: Not the Polly Pockets! You mean like the Polly in this photo...which is identical to one I'm looking at right next to my desk. And FYI, they already recalled some Pollys last November.

This latest round of toys going to the bad toy graveyard deals with the ever-popular lead paint issue, as well as the big problem of magnets. When tiny magnets break off and more than one is swallowed, the magnets can stick to each other and cause intestinal perforations, which can be fatal. Three kids had surgery for this before the November recall. Ugh.

You may just want to put this on speed dial: Consumers should call Mattel at 888-597-6597 for information about the recalled toys with magnets, or 800-916-4997 for information about the recalled cars.

I just went through my sons toys.  When are they coming for the matchbox and hotwheels?  I'm betting they're next.

I was reading on line that the threat of lead is not just when your child puts the toys in his or her mouth, but if they play with the toy and then eat something before washing their hands.  I mean, my son doesn't put them in his mought but he takes baths with his cars.  He eats with them too.  He's played with them so much the paint is coming off.  Somehow I am not convinced that they don't have lead.  Without a testing kit, how can I know for sure?  I'm seriously thinking of quarantining these toys.  Is that too reactionary??

Yea, when are they going to come for the matchbox and hot wheels. My son has a huge toy box filled half way with those little cars.

He doesn't have the "Sarge" car from the movie but he does have "Doc" and the old school "Lightning McQueen". Are those going to be recalled also??? I love them, but this makes me sad. For now they are going to be on the top shelf until I am sure that the other cars from the movie "Cars" are not affected.

Oh we have like 30 Cars and there's no way we're tossing them all.  We checked the numbers on the bottom of our "Sarge", and he's safe per the Mattel public release, because we bought him (it?) in 2006.  Maybe I'm being too lax but we're not throwing out anything that hasn't been specifically identified as a problem.

I dream of a day when I can get through a whole hour without reading anything that says "toy recall," "lead paint," and "manufactured in China." That day has not come yet. Now Hampton Direct is recalling about 27,000 magnetic
