Your Baby's Brain Will Atrophy Without Educational Toys

Posted by Karen Murphy

baby einsteinI knew this was going to happen. A recent study reveals that the brains of babies who aren't exposed to large amounts of educational videos (with cheesy classical music), electronic toys with flashing lights and beeping, and a constant array of "enrichment activities" actually atrophied over a period of time*. In other words, if you want your child not to get ahead but to JUST KEEP UP, you apparently must invest hours of your day ensuring that your baby has everything it needs to succeed in life. Hours. Round the clock. Scary! Don't you feel the pressure?

Okay, I'm so kidding. Actually, I think so-called educational toys are a waste of money and a huge drain on our plastics stockpiles

And apparently I'm not alone in this thinking. Parents feel driven to buy and consume tons of crap each year in the name of helping their kids become "smarter, happier young children." Gag. Kids don't need mounds of toys: trust me, they will find something to play with. And "educational?" A few well thought-out purchases of open-ended toys like wooden blocks, lengths of fabric, and of course BOOKS are really all a baby needs. Oh, and time with you, because watching what you do is one way they learn, of course.

So you can throw away that Leap Pad now, as well as all those Baby Einstein DVDs.

You're welcome.

*Typically 70-80 years or so.

Dr. Dimitri Christakis did a study on babies who watch the Baby Einstein videos and he came to this conclusion: I would rather babies watch 'American Idol' than these videos . He says that children in the 8 - 16 month range who watched these videos

One of the smartest things I ever heard was from a leader of my Mommy and Me class, which was that if a toy needs batteries, it doesn't require the user to use any creative thinking...it does the "playing" for them.  My daughter had very few toys with batteries (mostly those given to us by other people), and she has the most creative play now that she has gotten older.  Kids will find things to play with (even sticks and leaves) and will be more creative and imaginative than if they only play with the toys that talk/flash/sing/make noise...

Did anyone see the Canadian piece on Baby Einstein?  Classic.  The completely weasil about by stating they named the product after Einstein because he was such a great humanitarian (not brilliant).  Marketing -- you gotta love it.  2nd oldest profession in the world.

I'm a fan of broken toys and non-toys.  Right now my son is playing with old shopping bags (the paper kind with handles -- not plastic bags -- i'm bad but not *that* bad) and playing "groceries".  He was using his pull up diapers as grocery bags, but I had to run and give him shopping bags to thwart his "creativity".  Bad mommy.

We have a lot of Baby Einstein videos and I'm not going to throw them away.  I have a lot of friends who also love them.  I think the difference is that none of us got them because we honestly think they wil turn our babies into geniuses.  I don't know anyone who thinks that.  These researchers don't give enough credit to the parents.  My son did learn about space from one of his videos, but we watch it together, and he could have also learned about it from a book, nor will it give him a jump on school.  It doesn't matter how many imaginative toys or books you have if you don't ever take the time to sit with your child and interact.
