String Bikinis For Toddlers

bikini toddlerYou know what every two year old little girl needs? Well I can tell you this - the answer is NOT a string bikini.

Why are the clothing designers trying to sexualize our little kids? And what kind of parent is buying a string bikini for a toddler?

Yes, yes, I get that you think it is ironic. But why would want to draw that kind of attention to your baby girl? Is it some kind of attention that you aren't getting? I am concerned that the market for this bathing suit draws from the same pool as "mothers that are likely to kill teenagers so that their daughters get on the cheerleading squad".

All I'm saying is ew - gross. An 18 month old is not a sex object. Don't dress her like one.

I don't see how this is any different than putting a little girl in a two piece bathing suit.  I always had a two piece when I was a little baby because that way my mom could take the top off if she wanted to and just let me run around in my bottoms.  I'm completely opposed to the sexualization of little girls that's currently sweeping the nation, but let's not automatically equate nudity or partial nudity with sexualization, because that's also a dangerous extreme.

Bikinis were designed to make women look sexy.  I have definite issues with putting my seven month old daughter in something that was designed to enhance her sex appeal...she's seven months old.

Don't get me wrong here.  I'm by no means a prude, but come on.

Calm down a little bit there, it's not that bad. My toddler wears a bikini (the small paul one with the skull and crossbones on the butt - it's very cute).

There's no sexualization going on. No more than having your toddler run around naked in the summer. It wasn't even designed to enhance her sex appeal. She's 18 months old, not 18 years old. She's short and chubby and wears a diaper. Next summer when she's taller and thinner and probably doesn't wear a diaper, she'll fit into the same swimsuit because it's a two piece. It's also not as hot for her tummy.

By the way, as a man, there's nothing sexier to me about a two piece bathing suit than a one piece bathing suit. They both show plenty. It's not the belly button that we get worked up about, you know.

WOW, why so judgmental? I purchased a bikini (not string, but a cute two piece) for my baby because it was on sale in her size at Old Navy. I don't get how anyone could think how any bikini would sexualize a baby/toddler in any way. I really really don't get it-and I actually am on the prudish side!

I think there's a difference between a cute two piece and a string bikini. I've worn and loved many a string bikini in my day, and the thing about them is that, more than most women's bathing suits, they're all about the boobs. By covering only the one part, they, um, draw attention. And that's a little silly on a toddler, no? What's next, tiny pasties?

I do see where Sarah is coming from, a string bikini is pushing the envelope (I would not consider the picture posted with the blog an accurate example of a string bikini).

Although I am not opposed to bikinis on little girls, they are practical, afterall. I hated going to the beach in a one piece and getting sand in the crotch with no easy way to get it out. Twisting the bottom inside out wasn't a solution b/c the sand always got caught in the flap of extra material. By far, a two piece is easier to get the sand out and little kids (both boys and girls) spend a lot of time playing in the sand, both in and out of the water.

BTW, I want a two piece with a skull and crossbones on the butt! Where's the mommy tankini version?

There is a difference between a string bikini and a two-piece.  I wouldn't let my ten-year old wear a SB because it signifies something entirely different than just a two-piece.

BTW, why do you have to cover up the nipples on your female baby and not your male?  She's just a baby...

Oh, and SBs are way less comfortable than a regular bathing suit without all the strings and knots ... dare I suggest that a string bikini is also a choking hazard??

My kid wears a two-piece suit until she starts trying to pull the top off, then it's a one-piece.  A string bikini is bad for a toddler for one reason - lots of strings.  I'd like to see a toddler wear one of those and not pull it off in a matter of seconds.  There are strings!  For pulling!

You know, I always put Sweet Pea in two-piece suits until this year.  I'm not sure there's anything cuter than a toddler girl with her little tummy sticking out of a two-piece suit.

Strangely enough, she turned five this year and her cute little tummy is gone -- it's flat and toned and I got that girl into a one-piece so fast it would make your head spin.

While I would not personally put my little girl into a two piece bathing suit at all, there is a difference between a girlish one and a scaled-down adult one (such as the picture in this post). Clothes for prepubescent girls should not be sexually provocative!

The buyer for that store deserves a big old smack!
