Dirty Babies Have Better Skin

Posted by Kelly Mills
baby bathOkay, that post title is a little misleading, but as it turns out, washing babies a ton may not be so good for their sensitive little skin. More than twice as many babies have skin problems as did a generation ago, and part of this may be due to our over-zealous scrubbing of their little bodies. Ellen Dalrymple, editor of Mother and Baby magazine, says in a lovely turn of phrase, "'It is not a good idea to bath baby every day, two or three times a week is plenty with the odd top and tail in between.'" Hey, I'm happy for any excuse not to have to deal with yet another baby chore. I can't wait for the study that says a once-a-month bath is good. And if you have a newborn, how often do you actually shower yourself? Not every day, I bet.

The other issue with all the rub-a-dub is that we use more chemicals on our kids now, what with special soaps and antiseptic wipes. But if you need to get your OCD out somewhere, go the sun protection route. Only a third of parents in this survey made sure their kids wore sunscreen regularly. Now, I believe you are supposed to use "chemical free" sunscreen on infants, like titanium oxide or zinc oxide, which provides a physical barrier against rays. And a hat with a brim. Perhaps this monstrosity could have some use after all.

Well, that's good news.  I only bathe the baby when she is stinky and/or has things sticking to her.  If I don't wipe off the worst bits of crud, well, hey!  SNACK!

My kids get bathed most days in the summer, to wash off all the sweat and sunscreen.  Less often in the winter, esecially since both have dry skin and excema.

Mine too--they get baths most days in the summer, to wash off the waterproof sunscreen. If I don't wash it off, my oldest gets itchy.

But in the winter, it's every other day and that seems to be enough.

When she was younger, I would give a bath every other day or so. But now, I give a bath everyday. She loves baths and water so I can't help myself, plus now that she's all over the place and gets stickier faster.

I forgot to mention.  I have always showered every day since my kids were born.  Especially in the post partum period, what with all the blood and other fluids.  It's just not an option.  Maybe I am vain, but I like to be clean.

When my daughter was a baby it was part of her bedtime ritual so she got a bath every night before bed, now that she is a toddler she LOVES her evening bath with her papa...  he comes home and she starts running to the bath and undressing...  So as long as she enjoys it she will bathe every day - but not always with a shampoo and soap.

As for me, I can not stand to not shower in the morning - even with a newborn it had to be done - like my morning cup of joe!

I didn't bathe my son for 4 days and his eczema went away permanently. So much for the cortisone I kept forgetting to put on (per the ped)

Heck, I don't bathe myself every day - every other day works for me, except in summer since we live near the beach and I don't like sand in my crack.  My son bathes when he needs it, which might be once a week, might be every day.  As long as he doesn't stink and isn't actively crusty and gross, we're good to go.

Daily bathing and ultra-cleanliness is very much a Western-world thing.  We are fortunate that we have the water resources to allow us to do so.  As for me, if I shower every day, my skin gets dried out and my hair goes all insane, so I shower every other day at most, unless I'm gross and sweaty from a trip to the beach, a workout, or chasing my kid around.
